It's pretty good.
As someone who played for the first time a year ago, I'd say its easy dark souls with platforming.

Still way above average, but nowhere near close the masterpiece people who grew up with N64 as kids want you to believe.

It's good shit, but the first hourish of the game has some puzzles that are impossible to solve without a guide.
Example: To get into the castle, you need to get an egg from a random ho, wait a day for it to hatch, and then wake up Super Mario
