Eh, it's not that great. As far as I remember the only thing it's the best weapon for is killing pods. It's convenient for lurkers/leapers at a distance but it's not really ammo efficient.
It's definitely the best "one gun", but you have four slots. Ripper/Line gun/Pulse rifle combo is far better.

FarCry 2's is actually one of my most favourites. I use it almost exclusively every time replay it. but at the same time my build is stealth: running the grenade launcher secondary, MP5SD as primary and dart gun as special.

In the old games the RL was better because it had 2 shots and had enough splash to let you miss and no charge. The only utility was to take out a banshee/hornet.

In the new games the railgun is superior in every respect

I like that it's basically a glorified magnifying glass. Changing the lens and frame gives it different properties to overcome any situation. And I also like the idea that you have to carry around a ton of parts and actually reassemble it as opposed to a magic weapon that just does everything.

I found MP5 really bad in an open firefight. I never went far enough to unlock GL. My kit was dart gun as an anti-sniper weapon, silent Mak as a mid-close range silent sniper rifle, AK as a generic shit-fucking weapon.

If you are on PC you can download the DLC patch. Gives you the Suppressed Shotgun and explosive Cross Bow. Sawn Off is shit because it is single shot even though you have 2 barrels. Shotguns are really good in this game though.

I think I had it. I just got tired of running around the map. Some missions were cool, but overall it felt like there was a lot of padding, and it gradually sapped my will to play.

Assassinations were neat. I really liked when the Serbian buddy sent me on a mission to kill some dude because he sold him a bad car. I arrived at that big shanty town, he was sleeping in a hut next to the edge of it. I crept in without killing almost anyone (I think I capped the rocket launcher guy who was overlooking the town, just in case I screw up because I didn't want to deal with somebody firing missiles at me from an elevated position), found him sleeping and cut him down with a machete, then crept out as sun was raising. He probably wasn't even really a bad guy, that was such a beautiful moment really. The game had moments like that, but goddamn padding just ruins it.

Pic related and Plasma Storm are the two guns that I have most fun with. Plasma Storm is definitely more efficient but doesn't have as high fun factor.

For melee weapons, Uchigatana and Black Knight Halberd from Souls series.

Ehh, its good for a quick fix of something to play, if you dont intend to sit there for the whole day. Do a defense mission or survival or something and then come off. The gameplay is fantastic, there is lots of variety, a shame there isnt much to actuall do in the game once you get past a certain point.

What makes a good double barrel isnt just the damage, its the feel of it, it needs a nice percussion and reload too that makes it satisfying to use. A bad shotgun sounds like a firecracker going off, you want to feel your balls vibrate when you fire one.

It does substantially more damage. A well placed laser shot can destroy a scorpion/wraith in one hit while the railgun needs more ammo to do the job.
The railgun has the advantage of load speed and ammo capacity tho, as an antipersonal weapon.
Both fit their own niche well
