Where do you rank this in terms of Sonic games?
Its pretty good, not as good as 2 or 3&K, but its still fun.
Levels are huge - though the downside of this is how the difficulty is on the easy end. On the other hand, I am glad that bottomless pits are almost non-existent. Makes it non-frustrating to play through.
the 2011 port?
very high
like maybe joint first with 3&K
it's concise yet offers multiple different playthroughs
god-tier soundtrack (the JAP/PAL one ofc) but the fact that you can chose between them is nice because the US boss music is great
boss fights that subvert the sonic norm in a good way
glorious opening and ending FMVs
you can shit on Wacky Workbench all you like, the chaos is fun

Someone made a handy diagram for quick reference.
Personally, I think it's slightly worse than 2, but slightly better than 1. The Taxman remake is the definitive version though by a wide margin.

3&K>1>2>CD

1 higher than 2 and CD? Why is that?
US soundtrack is the best soundtrack any sonic game has had.
Fight me.

I agree, never get the overall preference I see for the JPN Track.
Especially prefer Stardust Speedway US

Partially because I have a really big soft spot for 1
Partially because 2's special stages get obnoxious as fuck towards the end and I'm really not fond at all of the latter half of the game (sans the final pair of boss fights) while Sonic CD just feels like the bastard spawn of 1.

Fair, I think 2s quality dropped with Metropolis Zone

3(&k)>2>1>cd
>cant go super
>can only play as sonic
>worse metal sonic fight ever especially after how hyped the cutscenes made it
>did not enjoy the mini game levels
>weak payoff for getting all time stones
not a fan of time travel shinanigans
replayed the rerelease to give it another try. opinion remained the same. i did enjoy the run in place mechanic and ost
