It's hard. It should be interesting, not fire, ice or heal mage. Shouldn't be pure brute with zweihander. Non-support, non-bow bard. Black/spirit/earth non-debuff non-dot mage. Spear/chain/whip fighter. One handed sword/throwing weapon rogue.

If you're going by D&D terms:
Mages: not a class, but the generic term for any arcane spellcaster. Wizards, sorcerers, illusionists, and warlocks are all mages.

Wizards: mages whose understanding of magic is academic rather than innate. Mechanically, this means they prepare spells ahead of time, but are ultimately more powerful as spellcasters with more spells per day.

Sorcerers: mages whose magic is instinctive rather than trained. Mechanically, this means they can cast whatever spell they have available without needing to prepare beforehand, have a wider variety of skills and can easily be used for a gish build, but have fewer spells per day.

Yeah, since they're all solo games, being able to do it yourself is the only way you're going to do it at all.

Moreover, simply the way those games were designed at the time, every class is entirely unique and has special features besides just some numbers and spell access. So in NetHack, for example, the priest is also able to see if items are blessed or cursed and will eventually gain the ability to sense monsters they can't see.

If you're used to modern "roguelikes" which not only aren't roguelikes but usually indie shit lazily hacked together in two weeks, it's even more of a surprise to go back to a time when people took the genre seriously.
