Furthermore, I haven't even heard about the game prior to the BBX teaser, so it seems like it's not as popular as Blaz or GG, which seems pretty unpopular.

Alright, I don't relly know how to shill but 'ere we fookin' go maeighty.

So the game is fairly standard anime hijinks for a fighter on the 2d plane, that is an excuse plot that has characters duke it out in a "Hollow Night".
Hyde is the MC and is relatively unskilled but has a sword that can kill immortals and that's something that's pretty fucking wanted, right.
Anyway, the goal of the story is of Hyde to stop Paradox before a Re:Brith can happen or something of the like, I can't really remember.

ANYWAY, what's a game without gameplay?
Standard fare again, you have supers, cancels, ultimates and the like.
But then you also have the GRD meter, those little squares at the bottom of the screen count towards a mid-fight power-up if you get them all. They also have more uses too.
You then get access to a 200% meter rather than a 100% meter that other fighting games dish out like your conservative uncle on Halloween.
I haven't played this game in a long ass time and this is the best I can remember.

The reason anyone thinks UNIEL has some of the best fighting game mechanics is tied to the Grid system; the little squares in the bottom middle of the screen with the circle filling up between them. As you and your opponent play, you will gain and lose those squares. When the circle fills up, whoever has the most squares gets access to Vorpal state, where they get a 10% damage boost and (more importantly) the ability to spend their Vorpal in order to do a GG/BB-like Rapid Cancel. It's absolutely critical.

The squares don't fill up arbitrarily; the game tracks the actions of both players, and whoever is playing better will get more Grid. Hitting your opponent? You get Grid. But if they block your attacks? They get Grid, and a lot of it. Use Assault as a pseudo-airdash? You get Grid just for using it, and you get more for hitting them when you do use it. But if they block your attack? You don't get any. If you throw your opponent you get Grid, some damage and maybe even a combo. If they tech your throw, not only do they get Grid, you're put at an instant frame disadvantage so your turn is typically over unless you're willing to try and press a button right after that.

There aren't many defensive options in the game, either. You have Veil Off, which is sort of an invincible Burst, but it has slow startup, starts burning all of the meter you have when you use it, and if it gets blocked your opponent gets a free combo on you. There's Guard Thrust which is like an Alpha Counter, but it costs your Vorpal state to use it, or if you don't have Vorpal you need to have at least 100 meter and have to spend ALL of your meter to do it, and you Grid Break yourself and lose access to the Grid Gauge and everything related to the D button. There's Shielding you can do to increase pushback for your opponent when you block their moves, but if you guess wrong with your Shield you also get Grid Broken. It's just a very slow (for an anime fighter), footsies game. Mostly.

While the game is most definitely an anime fighter, the gameplay in much more "grounded" as the air movement options sparse (no air backdashes, forward airdash being kinda bad). The roster is known for having lots of screen control with either giant normals or projectiles that stay stationary. Coming from Melty is reverse beat, allowing you to chain normals in whatever order you wish, as well as the shield function as one of your primary defensive options.

You are probably referring to GRD bar at the bottom center of the screen (pic related), widely praised for being a mechanic that rewards good decision making. During the match, points (the squares) are given to players who play neutral well (ie. Gaining screen space, hitting the opponent, blocking, and using shield) and points deducted for the opposite. At the end of the 7 second timer (the circle), whoever has earned more points will gain Vorpal, a passive state that buffs your damage as well as giving you the ability to forfeit the state (and all your points) for a GG-style YRC.

Imagine BB but you can go 6C > 5B > 2A. There's a bit more creativity and the characters' normals are absolutely everywhere on the screen. There is airdashing but its limited to forward leaps rather than backwards ones. Using the guard also takes some time to get used to.

I'd say Xrd and move up from there. If you want more characters and a few different playstyles and mechanics, go with GGXXAC+R.

I'm biased though because I like +R more than Xrd and haven't played Revelator so maybe I'm wrong and Revelator has better mechanics.

For BB, Start with CT. The PC port is fucking awful so if you can get it on a console, do so, or just emulate it on PSP.

If you don't care about story at all, get BBCF. If you do care about story, get CT, then CSEX, then CPEX and CF.

IMO the writing in BB fucking nosedives in quality after CS with blatant mary sues being added and character motivations being all over the place, with obviously forced fights, and literal filler characters.

There's three factions overall. Yato, Licht Kreis, and Amnesia but they each have a few outliers in their membership on who's onboard with the group's plans and those who just act alone so it's not the most concrete. What we do know is that Hyde is a part of the Yato thanks to Linne and Hilda is by far the the antagonist to a lot of people and she leads Amnesia. On the other side, Gordeau is an ex-member of Amnesia to just wants to kill Wagner, a member of Licht Kreis for killing a friend of his.

40-50% of the roster's going to be Blazblue, since its title is on the box.
For RWBY, only Team RWBY's getting in at most, due to the work required to make new characters.
Then the rest of the roster will be evenly split between Persona and UNIEL.
And since this is a 2v2 fighter, the roster's gotta be an even number.

So I'd guess... 12 Blazblue, 7 Persona, 7 UNIEL, and 4 RWBY, leaving us with 30 characters in the base roster.

They're typically only used when you're confident they'll catch an attack, otherwise they just leave you vulnerable to getting exposed, so they often used sparingly. If you notice your opponent always does a certain string, try to hit them with the counter during a gap, then don't do it next time they use that string because they might end it early.

You have to figure out what your opponent is gonna do next. You usually gotta read them for that to happen. Things like repetitive patterns in their strings and stuff helps, or looking for obvious clues, like you're blocking low and you know your opponent is gonna try for an overhead next.
You also have to watch out that they don't read you as well and make you whiff your counter. Things like frame traps and delaying their strings are also common if they realize they're getting caught in your counter.
