Most big new games felt like entirely new experiences or ideas no matter how much they borrowed from or were inspired by other games. Not much has changed but now there's just such a massive amount of games on the market that it's easy to see the trends that all games have followed for decades.

Exactly, I don't doubt that. Being a kid was a huge part of what made those games feel great. Not being cynical, opinionated, and generally carefree and optimistic let me and a lot of other kids at that time throw ourselves at any and every game without care.
