They should have just introduced "official" support for texture packs, and included their own one that radically changed the style to something good disguised as a way to get the ball rolling, then slowly keep using it in official material until it's accepted as the official textures.

They acknowledge that they would never be able to get lightning in a bottle. The success of minecraft went wild because of the time it came out and how it came to be. Even if an improved version came out it would never be able to mimic the original's explosive success. Attempting to make it better than the original, as far as sales are concerned, would mean investing far more into it than a normal game. No company wants to take a risk like that when they can simply improve the original and rake in basically free, safe profit.

The Birch tree removes noise and adds color to the tree, which makes it technically an improvement.

The Iron block adds a little noise, possibly to make it look worn? particularly noticeable on the borders, it's really too insignificant to notice in actual play

The Obsidian, however, does nothing but add noise and lines in places there doesn't need to be, while also making the block almost unrecognizable: the only similarities they share are the color pallet. The Obsidian change does nothing but remove what little decorative ability it had by making it look like a dark purple dirt.

Xbox's website doesn't seem to have a most popular section so I can't check that one.
And, it's not a steam game, so I don't have a player count.
