What games have the absolute best writing? Can any game truly be called a masterpiece based on it's writing/story alone?

>Can any game truly be called a masterpiece based on it's writing/story alone?
No. No matter what the game is, the very least it should have the very least managable gameplay. Everything else is secondary.
>>384339264
Nope. If anything, writing needs to be connected to gameplay through mechanics in a meaningful way to begin a conversation about that.

Silent hill 1-3 and Deadly Premonition are literally the only games I have ever seen with good writing. Every other video game, without exception, has shit writing.

Let me rephrase the question: does any game have good enough writing to be considered "great" based on that merit alone? Actual gameplay is irrelevant in this case.

What's so great about "The Great Gatsby"? I saw the movie, and the writing wasn't very impressive to me.

everything on that list is part of high school curriculum. Do /lit/ches read anything that isn't printed on a list for them?
>mfw getting an English degree
>haven't read a single of those books

It's e/lit/ism. The board is probably only second behind /a/ in that regard.
>absolute best [story]writing
Heh.
Letting full bias of visuals and genre preference fall into place, I think something like a Witcher game would be the best. But I never played that, so I'd go with Starcraft 1 and Brood War expansion's story, although it obviously lacks an "absolute" conclusion.

You phrased it well enough the first time and i dont think it can be a "masterpiece" in vidya terms if the gameplay is not something exceptional in any way.
It can still be a brilliant piece of literature but that would require it outshining the writing you find in good books, and i dont see that happening soon.

And yet, it has a much friendlier atmosphere than /v/.

>writing
Do you narration? Text adventures have some pretty good writing (like A Mind Forever Voyaging), but that kind of writing is generally not video games' strong suit. If you mean dialogue, then a ot of games have good dialogue, e.g., VtMB.
>>384343414
until you do/say the wrong thing. then you get outcast. whereas /v/ doesn't hide the fact everyone is on their own.
>>384343260
witcher writing is literally dogshit
>>384343089
>getting an English degree
I hope you make a mean cappuccino
>>384343771
>becoming an English teacher to teach the most important language in the world is useless
>>384339264
Wow, so many things are wrong in this pic. Is this how you're learning litterature in the US ?
>>384343835
why would you get an English degree to teach Chinese?
>Great Gatsby
>God tier
it's shit
