I love 2 but the main problem for me was that there was no character. We're given the 411 on the kids but that's it. We don't ever see them interact with each other or their world, leaving me to see them as blanks.

For example, there's a part where Tony, Jeff's best bro and his father are kidnapped by the Starman. We don't hear ANYTHING from Jeff about this. There's no urgency from him and theres nothing at all to show that he frantically wants to go save them.

There's also an example of Poo where when we play as him, there's a girl in the village that's been his friend since childhood and is always sad that he's always away training and that he never gives himself time to let himself have fun. We never hear about it from Poo and it wouldve been a nice way to explore him more. The ingredients are all there, but the meal is left uncooked and that's my biggest problem with Mother 2

and thats kind of the thing with the mother games, each one offers different things to different people, so that makes it hard to determine which one is the best without bringing personal feelings into the mix

I played Earthbound for the first time earlier this year, really enjoyed it. Made me intrested in giving 1 and 3 a chance, but looking into it 1 almost looks unplayable at the start of the game until you grind your fingers off. It looks daunting, not to mention that static combat screens with text only dissuade me from even giving grinding in that game a chance.

I'm a huge Earthbound fanboy, but even I have to admit Mother 3 is the best one. They fixed all the pacing issues of 2, the progression is much more fluid and require less grinding, musics are still top tier maybe better... Mother 2 still has its crazy setting, but so has 3, just not using the "american lore" idea.

Guess everything is a matter of tastes but Mother 1 is near unplayable by today standards though, I don't know how you can even rate it before 3.

To be honest I thought it was better left that way. Not a huge fan of characters developpement in RPG, it often ends up being awkward or clichéd. When it's just some vague back story, you can imagine things by yourself.

But I admit they did a pretty good job in Mother 3 exploring the characters without being too boring about that, so maybe it would have been not bad in 2, but it was still okay that way for me. Guess, they have some good writers hidden somewhere in Nintendo's basement. Shame we don't see them very oftenly.

Well I did mind the grinding... I think some parts of the late game were actually pretty hard near the end. The difficulty curve of Mother 3 was smoother and it was more appealing to me. Still this is a fantastic series. It's a shame Itoi doesn't have good ideas for a 4th episode.

I never really cared for the Mother series as a whole, ever single game bored me to tears. That being said, I have played them all. 2>3>1. 2 is my favorite of them only because it was filled to the brim with lots of charm and quirkiness. 3, less so, plus I hated 3's battle system. Some ideas just don't work well. 1 is just basically a typical NES RPG, hard, lots of grinding, and not exactly interesting.
As to the reason they all bored me? I don't know honestly. I just found them a slog to go through. It would always start out kind of fun, and then just feel unsatisfying. Its kind of like yogurt for me, tastes fine at first, but nearing the end just becomes sort of plain.

1 is memorable, great music
2 is great music, well gameplay, story is good
3 is great story, good music
