Does anybody know a game with a balanced magic system? I mean

Old JRPGs are good because distance isn't a factor. As long as melee characters have to get in range to hit things, they're either going to be underpowered or overpowered. When you don't have to balance for gap closing then you can just make melee characters and damaging magic users do the same damage with different graphics and boom you got balance.
