Even if you stay, a few years takes hundreds of hours of game time, even leaving it on max speed. Kids would be a drain on resources FAR longer than they are ever actually helpful.
Plus the creator probably does not want the brutal shit that goes down in the game to happen to kids.

Well maybe you could have like a cryptosleep casket or something that will make them age faster, faster growth (for gameplay reasons), some food/drug to make people age faster, some gun that age people. I don't know but I think that's a pretty lazy reason not to add something like that in. As for the brutal part, you can already harvest organs and shit from people, why the fuck wouldn't you be able to raise a child? Just disable harvesting and shit on them, mod makers will enable it later anyways.

You can have multiple colonies in the vanilla game but it will probably lag. I just like to play on Large/Huge and build myself a huge castle and gather as many colonists as I can.

Just to make vanilla a little better:
Efficient Light
Hospitality
EPOE
RT Fuse

Other than that, I like More Vanilla Turrets for the indoor turrets, and Prepare Carefully is useful if you want to fuck around with your colonists a bit (or make them the best, whatever you want).

It's a strategy game, what do you want from the combat? Planning defenses and properly positioning your people in cover seems like all you can really ask for. It's better than any other colony builder I've played.

It's not like it's suddenly going to turn into an FPS game when combat starts.

The game is pretty complete as-is and mods only make it better, and you should buy it based on it's current state when making a decision. The Early Access for this game basically just means that as long as the game is doing well and the creator feels like it he'll continue working on it.

If you're wondering whether you'll like it or not, just pirate it first. I played with a pirated copy for ~12 hours before deciding to buy it myself.

Really don't like how psychic ships keep crashing right on my front door with a billion mechanoids spawning out of them, they wrecked all my turrets and incapacitated most of my crew, luckily no-one died though
