>>384330359
Be sure to play the game with the japanese voices.

Never thought of it that way. I've always assumed it's better in every way, minus some of the touchscreen nonsense they tacked on.

AoS>DoS
>>384330523
I played DoS first and I think it's a good game, but I don't know if it's superior to AoS. It's hard to top the Julius fight, even though the Soma fight is a nice reimagining of Rondo Dracula.

DoS is the best Castlemania.
AoS is also good, but obviously inferior.

>Symphony of the Night looks and sounds better

I dispute that. SotN may have higher sound quality but its music and choice of sound effects are generally weaker compositionally. The only thing it has going for it in the sound department is memeier voice acting.
>>384331645
Give me one (1) reason why AoS isn't better in every way, art direction aside.
Just beat AoS again and wrapping up with a quick Julius mode playthrough.
Now I have to choose whether to go back to my CVIII playthrough I wanted a break from or play another GBA/DS game, but I am also feeling a little bit like playing Lament of Innocence since I can and it's been a while.

>>384331936
The whole aesthetic aspect and dark tone in Castlevania games is very important.
>>384331936
Everyone loved the old art style when it started in SoTN, it was just a really jarring change even though it wasn't the first time anime style was used for the series.
>>384331514
Just off the top of my head Julius' is better.
>>384331743
you are a fucking idiot
>>384330523
AoS is better than DoS, but understand that Aria is a fucking masterpiece. Very few games are as good as Aria.
Dawn of Sorrow is also great, almost as good as Aria. There's not a huge gap between them. The main complain everyone has with Dawn is the absence of Ayami Kojima as the game's art director. The DS games abandoned the series iconic gothic look for a mediocre anime art direction. Anime sensibilities also spilled their way into the dialogue and characters. Beyond that, Dawn is on roughly equal footing with Aria where it counts. It benefits from the superior hardware of the DS versus the GBA with better visuals and sound. Aria and Dawn have two of the most interesting castles in the game between them. Aria probably has the best version of Dracula's castle whereas Dawn has a very unique castle.
>>384332135

I'm playing it right now and so far I don't think its better than AoS. I don't like how luck affects soul drops even less than in Aria, I prefer finding weapons over having to grind rare souls to upgrade them, and I hate the touchscreen gimmick with bosses, doubly so because I'm emulating and drawing quick straight lines with a mouse is extremely difficult, having two soul loadouts is nice though.
Some lesser complaints I have are that the music is mostly okay, with few good tracks, and the new art style is shit.

I think Simon's Quest deserves a remake. Not a 3D remake, obviously.
Best Guardian Soul?
I've been playing Dawn of Sorrow the last couple of days and I have some things to say about it
pros:
>bosses are really chanllenging and even if you grinding they can give you a hard time
>music and sound design are top-notch
>sprites are god tier
>soul system's variety is really appreciated
cons:
>even tho there is a variety of weapons at your dispossal, you'probably will just use an upgraded version of the first good sword / axe you find, making the exploration part unsatisfying at times
>only 3 equipment slots with lots of options for each one of them, again, you'll find a lot of inferior equipment through the game making the act discovering them really dissapointing
>some soul drop rates are just bullshit
>game content locked behind random drops
>map doesn't allow custom marking, making the backtracking process unnecesarily frustrating at times
>when you die the game goes back to the main title, which is a waste of time
Overall, I'm enjoying the game a lot but I can't help тo think that having some more equipment slots would improve this game a lot instead of just collecting random items that you will never equip.
I really like the soul system in this games and the variety of options it offers to the player, however, you can only equip a handful of them at the time, discouraging experimentation and players will tent to use just a couple of souls in every situtation instead of modifying their gear according to the presented challenge.
>>384334630

Dawn of Sorrow's overly generous leveling system pisses me off. An action RPG game should be a power fantasy where you can feel yourself gradually becoming stronger than enemies in a region. Not, like, where you can one-hit-kill any monster after 5 minutes of just reaching the next save spot.

Ever played CotM on original GBA? You literally can't see anything at times. HoD looks like that because of the reaction to how CotM looked. It went way too bright yes which is why AoS is in the middle but at no point I hate on HoD for looking like it does.
>>384337065

And yeah almost every enemy in the game can drop a soul that grants you a special attack or ability.

SotN was a game of its time. That time has passed.

The anime art and dialogue is literally the only thing that makes people hate Portrait of Ruin.
DoS was still good story-wise because the anime influence wasn't too strong yet, but slippery slope is not a fallacy, and PoR was unsaveable.
OoE dropped the animu art, and regained some composture.

No it didn't, the orb system was worst, the bosses can be killed in 30 seconds tops. The art style is really muddy and bright and the music is some of the worst in the series as a whole. The only thing I can was better was the controls and even then nothing felt like it really had any weight to it. Also lets not forget the awful castle design and the gimmicky "second castle" that looks exactly just like the other castle and you have to navigate between each one if you can even remember which castle you are currently in. Any remote of fun that can be had with HoD drops completely off when you get to the clock tower. And fuck that stupid ass store gimmick.

LOL.It isn't. Its even worse because everything is tied to the sub-weapons so you are only limited to what you have at the time so it was pointless to use anything that wasn't axe or cross.
>>384330149
Naw. It's a pretty fun little game.
>>384337852
What the fuck, I never even knew that was possible.
I think it has more to do with the fact that there isn't much to discuss. HK is a great game, but it doesn't really do enough new or amazing stuff to leave it's mark. It'll be remembered as a cult classic, not a revolutionizing hit.
The worst part about OoE is the fucking crab boss.

That's a really good point, and one of the reasons I'm having such a hard time bringing myself to actually walk away from the game after 100%ing it. I want there to be more, it has a great amount of content but I'll be damned if I'm not sitting here praying the new content is released asap. Maybe further iterations and DLCs will provide some more lore discussion and (I hope) some repeatable modes like boss rushes or co-op somehow.

I agree the dream nail fights aren't too inspired, and 2/3 of them are just easy boss fights to begin with, sped up. But there's at least one entire area with little to no current content that is a very viable place for DLC to flesh out.
Not to mention, the back goal of a second playable character was met. (The goal of Colosseum of Fools wasn't met, but was made anyway) So that gives you a good idea that a lot more content is coming. I just hope it's sooner than later.
Then again I can see myself playing this game again yearly, at least.
And thanks, it's mostly just walking left. Definitely worth it to max out your HP though, despite random circumstances making it take a couple runs.

Yeah that one empty room full of dead spider things in Deepnest is suspicious, I don't know if that will be the next DLC spot. Also I don't know if that one bug who had the shield as a weapon did anything in the arena or not. Either way, my beef with the flower quest was that the excuse that a trolley being unstable would destroy the flower seemed like bullshit. The stag I can understand, but not the trolley. Also did that one female bug with a giant club do anything?
>tfw you use the medusa heads to jump up here

>>384336314
The only bathroom is in Castlevania behind drac's room. This means after you kill him you have a time limit before his castle collapses to both use it and escape. Then you have to wait 100 years for your ancestors to use the bathroom.
>>384339678
*Spoilers* (Not gonna black out my entire post)
We can assume it'll be the DLC, because the Hornet character (the bug with the needle you fight twice, seemingly female) was born? raised? or lived in? the distant village (Deepnest, spider area) where that fairly empty area is, and she is a main piece of the story that is not extrapolated on much. Mostly Assumptions, though.
The trams don't break the flower, only stags.
The club bug can help you with the Traitor Lord (mantis boss in Queen's Gardens) if you meet her in all her locations before that.
>>384333350
I emulated DoS too. I suggest you download a patch for the game that removes the touchscreen shit. With that patch you can just click on two of the points of the seal and you're done. They're kinda pointless anyway and if you fuck up you gotta do the boss all over again.

>>384340285
The Igarashi games kind of but there's some major difference. One having to deal with grinding/leveling which Metroid doesn't have. Another is that powers tend to be more about moving around in Castlevania where Metroid the focus tend to be more about weapons (yes there's suit upgrade but for the most part you unlock more with weapons). Another Castlevania is more story heavy where Metroid is more subtle in it's story (outside Fusion and Other M). Metroid also focus on planetary places so you see more rocky areas while Castlevania is one large construct. Feel is much different even if the gameplay is very close.

I don't think you get to play as maria on any version but the saturn one(plus the 2 extra maps and BLOOD TEARS in shitty staturn compression)

>>implying a man would take his wife's family name four hundred years ago
if it was of a noble family, they absolutely would (and still do today)
>>384349280
No, you can definitely play as Maria in the PSP version. I was asking that question because I'm not too familiar with the Saturn version and if I remember correctly, PSP Maria and Saturn Maria have completely different movesets.
>>384349280
The PSP SotN bonus game has playable Maria, and she plays differently than the Saturn SotN playable Maria.
>>384349280
he's right, you can fight Maria before she gives the googles, and play as her once you've finished the game.

>inferior to AoS
The boss sealing and sould drop rates not being linked to luck stats are the only things DoS did worse than AoS. AoS is such a short cakewalk.

The guy who made that pic
>>384350889
Legion and Nuclais should've been the final bosses, the reason why there is no people bar Julia,Trevor and Isaac is because they all died for Drac's ressurection. You later fight a imperfect Dracula

1, 3 and Rondo are awesome, Super 4 and Bloodlines are damn fine, SotN and HoD are retarded collectathons.
>>384347489
There's a randomizer for the three NDS games as well.
http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1316/
Lots of options (some of them make the game quickly unbeatable though). Also auto-applies the no touchscreen seal making for DoS.
>>384351802
That word doesn't mean what you think it means.
>>384352062
This is fantastic. The game randomizer website doesn't have this, so I didn't know about it.
Thanks for the heads up.
Do you think with the release of the Netflix show being mostly positive, we will see another Castlevania game?
