Pyro is so underpowered right now that literally every other class is more effective at close-range combat. I main Pyro and I ALWAYS do better when I switch to Soldier.

All you gotta do to be an effective Soldier is aim in the general direction of the enemy team and press M1. Soldier is the most accessible class in the game right now.

The problem with Soldier, Demo and Scout is that they are always useful on a team. They aren't nearly as specialized as the other classes, and as such every fucking team needs a multitude of them or they will be fucked over. They have counters of course, but they are the ones who define the meta not because they are too good in any one area, but because they are all-around good at everything.

It becomes hard to nerf them though, because they're just "good" but they're never anything less than good, where as other classes have places where they are detrimental.

Actually, surprisingly no. Scout has better DPS and Demo has better DPS.

Almost all AoE attacks are identical in size. Demoman has AoE as well.

Soldier has a large hitscan hitbox, the game's second lowest ground speed, long reload times, a small clip size, and is not actually the best in any area- Demoman has the most powerful blast jumping, Scout has the most overall mobility, Heavy has the highest HP and Spy has the highest possible DPS.

Stock Soldier is balanced alongside stock Demoman, stock Scout, and stock Sniper.

The only thing overpowered about Soldier is the Disciplinary Action, Escape Plan, and Reserve Shooter.

Apart from that, he's a balanced class, and it's more an issue of Spy and Pyro being underpowered and Engineer/Heavy being too skewed to defense and too weak on offense.

1v1 soldier, Scout is gonna win almost every time if he knows what he is doing. The only exception is if the soldier packed a good close-range shotgun.

Quickiebomb does two things, it gains damage as it gets range, and it's fast enough where you can stack at least two at the sniper's feet.
If a sniper sees a quickiebomb and doesn't move to counter it immediately, he's dead. If he tries aiming at the corner you're lobbing them at in hopes of getting a bodyshot; he's going to get two of them at his feet and he will die.
If you're smart about evading his scope, you can get those two magic quickies at his feet and gib him. It's only a problem when you go against danger shield snipers because they take three. This is actually my preferred method of countering because snipers are notoriously unaware for anyone who isn't a spy, a sniper, or a scout.

The thing that people forget when they talk about Sniper is they assume a perfect player is using him.

That's obviously not true. Very few players are good enough to consistently headshot moving targets enough of the time to make Sniper a worthwhile choice relative to other classes.

That's why Sniper is actually balanced. He definitely has low counterplay, I won't disagree with that. And he has some overpowered unlocks (Danger Shield, Jarate, Sydney Sleeper in a comp environment, and Machina on certain maps).

But the stock Sniper class is not overpowered.

you misunderstand, on payload, A/D or anything that isn't 5CP or CTF, the sniper will be getting babysat, he's less of a problem in 5CP or CTF, but a massive issue in the actual fun modes, simply because the nature of A/D means that snipers can hang in the back with the engineers and snipe with impunity.

If Valve nerfs some of Sniper's secondaries, he'll have more counters again. Stock Sniper wielding SMG has plenty of counters, but Sniper wearing a secondary gets to selectively eliminate some of his counters for very little effort.

We know that Razorback and DDS are getting nerfed, which is good. Machina could probably stand to have a small nerf too.

Jarate still needs to be nerfed because it's almost impossible to dodge it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hYZbyUK170 and the explosion radius is twice the size of a regular rocket/grenade explosion. It allows Sniper to get rid of things that are meant to counter him like afterburn flinching, enemies at close range (when comboed with Bushwacka), and Spies.

ignite the enemy, airblast if you need to put some distance on them/chuck them somewhere predictable and swap to shotgun and pump them up with lead. so many flareshitters have forgotten how good stock shotgun is and debateably better than reserve shooter with the extra 2 shots at your disposal.
abuse the fuck out of corners/tight areas, you want your enemy to be shitting themselves from the get go. afterburn on stock is actually really good, and in the heat of the situation it can really put the pressure on while it's ticking down as you're shotgunning them.

ngl, flamethrower isn't that strong of a primary in most situations, especially against heavies or soldiers/demos with pocket meds. if you want to get a lot of kills off you need to supplement it with your secondary, and stock shotgun is the best at this with its range and damage output on singular targets.

For a long time they had a rule of banning seriously underpowered weapons like Sharpened Volcano Fragment in case people used them to BM (for example, you're already shitting on the other team, so you swap to Righteous Bison to humiliate them more).

If you are running shotty you are paying usually around 48 health for a decent rocket jump, which without overheal is almost 1/4 of your health. If you run gunboats, you are gimped in practically any fight where you don't ambush or have a teammate to help.

In general TF2 map design has shifted away from being Soldier friendly, take Granary which is Soldier paradise and compare it something like Sunshine or Viaduct Pro where Solly struggles.
