Steam Machines have thousands of games, modern AAA titles, better AMD drivers than you can get on Windows and they've gone absolutely nowhere so far because the hardware is too high end and too expensive with not enough name recognition or nostalgia.

The low end nostalgia market is exactly the space the big three have left open, with Nintendo only dipping their toes in to reassure investors that they've still got desirable products without really committing to it for fear it would devalue their more traditional nostalgia market in the virtual console.

Atari could have a winner on their hands if they can get old games and retro publishers on board.

Of course one of the rumors about Valve's new Steam Machines is that they'll have a $100 model replacing the Steam Link with a system that can actually play its own games.

Getting devs to port games is really expensive, and very difficult to get them to guarantee support.

The Linux community has been throwing money at developers on kickstarter for years now and most of the devs just take the money and never deliver, with a very small number delivering. Even then the ones that do often deliver years late when the game is no longer relevant.

A new console effort is going to really struggle to get developers no matter how much money they raise.

Unfortunately nobody other than Microsoft really has that as an option since they've captured so much of the market with their extremely non-standard stuff, and they can also go the other way around in getting developers to target their closed ecosystem first. So in Microsoft's case its not that they've made porting to their console easy, its that they've reduced Windows to a console OS and made supporting standards difficult.

Even if its an Nvidia supplied SOC, using a Linux or BSD derived OS, using Vulkan and SDL they'd probably still struggle to get indie devs to support their system even though in theory they're already doing all of those things to get the games on the Switch.

Modern devtools make porting incredibly easy already, most of the heavy lifting has been done already by the game engine developer and you can just export to a whole myriad of platforms from the very same IDE. There's still effort involved, but it's not even remotely the amount of effort it used to require.

Yes being a 3rd developer is easier, but your prestige aside of rare studio will be almost inexistant in comparison with a console maker. Players are talking about fifa/pes, tes/the witcher/mass effect, gta/saints row/watch dogs, they aren't talking about game that doesn't belong to a serie. Sega only had Sonic that could be called a serie, and the opponent is Mario. They aren't good to keep a serie good on a long time, true they now have Total War, Yakuza and Football Manager, but they aren't appealing for most casual console players.
If most of their one shot were released in their console, they wouldn't be some "3rd developer game" but exclusive. Whenever I talk to some Xbox fan about Vanquish they basically say: don't care I have gear of wars. Games like Alpha Protocol, Binary Domain, Bayonetta could have been way more popular of a Sega system 'cause they'd have the exclusive status.
For this, I think Sega still didn't give up on the console market.

What's stupid is that they're release an Atari Flashback 8 THIS YEAR.
I think it's safe to assume that whatever this thing is, it's essentially going to be a Flashback 8, but also run flash games.
