It didn't sell well because the fanbase for DMC are some of the most tryhard super serious dweebs of any fanbase, probably because DMC is outclassed by games like Ninja Gaiden and God Hand pretty soundly. It's always been runner-up to just about every action game. DmC was an attempt to reach a less tryhard audience, and it just failed. Game is great, but it's not that bad.

Their design team and stuff seem to be good at their job.

Some of the stuff that's just embarrassing might simply be because of what their bosses want. I don't know if you remember what Tameem and his goons thought was "badass," but it said a lot about the state of the game.
