Smash 3DS uses higher quality models when the game is paused or significantly zoomed in, this can be seen in-game in certain modes if you pause right on the threshold of zoom where the higher quality models start being used. Literally a built-in bullshot function.

It's not LOD, dipshit.
The higher quality models are displayed when the game is paused (or frozen) only. The easiest way to notice this is using the freezing function in training and close camera.
