About to start this, what can I expect?

more linear than previous entries but still plenty of secrets and sequence breaks, 10/10 atmosphere/sound design, good bossfights. an overall enjoyable game

Good gameplay (movement and abilities are an improvement over Super Metroid, hence why they were copied for Zero Metroid), challenging bosses, fun but highly linear exploration, and a nice semi-horror atmosphere.

I'm glad it was my first Metroid game.

An awful lot of somewhat condescending linearity.
A good story told with too much dialogue.
Rich atmosphere, excellent 2D art and brilliant music.
More emphasis on combat, with the best bosses in 2D Metroid.

if you really got the juice out of SM and ZM you're not going to like all the linearity

It's the first Metroid game I ever played, so it's wrapped up in too much nostalgia for me to be objective about it. Of course, I think it's god tier.
