Will video games ever achieve the status of becoming a universally accepted art form like film, music and literature?

So much effort, time and passion go into designing hardware, programming the software, designing the gameplay mechanics, writing the stories, composing the music and illustrating the art for video games, but sometimes I occasionally hear gaming-related topics in the mainstream news as relating narrowly to preteen children and the entire field is denigrated to being no more honorable than an ice cream truck. While there are definitely many games geared towards children and there's nothing wrong with it, there's so much more to gaming than simply that.

It's so much associated with toys that some people want to impose bans on certain types of video games because it seems that in their minds, "games are just toys for kids" and are gobsmacked about why anyone would make mature games like Bloodborne or The Witcher 3 for "children."

Will the time come where this awful view of video games exclusively as trivial toys for tots is broken and people of all kinds are able to come together and enjoy games in the same way they enjoy other forms of art?

I think the audience for video games inherently isn't too artistically inclined. Sure, you can make an artful game, but people who avidly play vieo games enjoy it like an artist creating an art piece for art enthusiasts to enjoy. You can artful video game but you're going to struggle to make it engaging and fun while also delivering a message, and then on top of that, being well received and/or popular

Your question reminds me of that one guy that called MGS 2 postmodernist. Now, my question is: is Kojima so dense, or did he just have luck?

I hope video games one day will be seen as a serious form of art. If more people took the medium and it's potential as art seriously, I think we would see way more cool and creative games.

Today's games industry seems way to focused on making profit rather than creating art, imo.

I hope they don't. I don't think video games are art. I think elements of video games like the assets and story can be art. But video games as a whole piece cannot be art.
