I always thought Artorias of the Abyss was overrated. I don't think it's bad but I also think it's far from the "best thing Dark Souls ever did" like people seem to praise it for.

Positives
>All four bosses are great
>Oolacile is one of the best areas in the series
>The added Sif stuff is great
>Added lore was much needed for people into that kind of thing
>NPCs are mostly great, Gough being among the best and Chester being very memorable
>Gold & Silver Tracers are insanely fun

Neutral
>Dark spells are fun and cool additions lore-wise, but became PvP cancer very quickly

Negatives
>Royal Wood and Chasm of the Abyss are insanely lazy
>Royal Wood is literally a repeating, massive forest with one armor set spread across it as the only treasure
>Royal Wood only has two enemy types (three counting the dogs) and they're just variants of vanilla game enemies
>Chasm of the Abyss is just a huge cave with repeated enemies from Oolacile and one new, horrible enemy type (it's just a black blob that moves at you slowly. it doesn't even have animations)
>Chasm of the Abyss lacks any decent treasure except a Dark spell and a shield that I've never seen anyone use
>The entire area being so dark makes it completely uninteresting visually
>Manus and Guardian weapons are horrible
>Ciaran was disappointing. A very brief dialogue, then she vanishes
