Just my opinion but sandbox is just the popular term to shill your MMO with. Same with RPG and other genres, for them its open-world, and for vidya in general its 4K. The average technology is not there yet to have such features as they are supposed to. The result is what we see, half-assed sandbox, open-world with invisible walls everywhere, 20 fps 4K with a monster machine, etc.

There wont be a sandbox MMO, better deal with it as soon as possible. We are just not there yet, its years in the future and no one even knows if that will still be the demand in those years.

I played WoW for about 4 years. BC-WoTLK.
I immensely enjoyed heroic raiding but everything since than has been very meh.

On a whim I subbed to FFXIV and even though I'm only level 57, the dungeons feel much more in line with what I want from a game. Not unforgiving, but actually having mechanics. It seems like in WoW lately it's just dps sponges with no real mechanics.

I haven't raided in WoW since..Cata but still, it's refreshing for dungeons to be fun.

You are pretty much correct, I would say people expectations on MMO are way too high because we have already seen and played everything there is to play in a MMO. You might want a sandbox, but you don't want a second job and spreadsheets. If the progression ceiling is low, then everyone will reach it fast and the game ecosystem will be defined by having to reach that ceiling as a floor before you can do anything with the community. If the progression ceiling is high, people will naturally compete to climb it.

This is fine on its own but it means that "second job and spreadsheets" naturally become the best way to climb. Any sandbox that isn't shit from the get-go will require that you put in tons of time and resources into it to stay relevant because the experience is so player-driven.

Players who want sandboxes like the idea but they haven't given any practical thought to how they would play. There're dozens of more flaws with them that aren't avoidable without compromising the concept. At best, sandbox ideas need to be imported to themepark MMOs.

If there are two things every MMO should learn from GW2, it's the way you dodge and to have jump puzzles

Fuck active combat and active dodge. It kills the viability of large scale combat and narrows encounter design to build around it. It makes simple grind content tedious and distills class identity.

I want to go in the opposite direction. Tab targeting is fine but they need to increase build variety and strategic depth. Keep the core mechanics simple and focus on encounters which require planning and coordination, have a combat system that scales well from 1 player to 100 players.

MMO PvP is almost always an afterthought to the rest of the game and has to operate within the limitations of it. The only MMOs I've ever played with decent structured PvP are GW1 which was built around it, and Warhammer Online where it was decent but still weaker than the open world.

I really think it's just a matter of effort, but honestly if you can design a good PvP game why make it an MMO instead of just making some eSports and saving yourself the trouble of funding an MMO?

Leveling with your buddies was also kind of a wasted endevour that would work for like a day, maybe a week, until one guy couldnt log on for a day or two and the other dude(s) got a few levels ahead. Leveling solo is also much quicker. Sitting in voice chat shooting the shit while doing your own thing and occasionally grouping up for elite quests/dungeons when you stacked up all the relevant quests was the way to do it.

Getting to end-game and then doing max level dungeons, pvp and raids with your buddies was also soooo much better than leveling. Leveling should almost always be looked as a race to the finish since the game hardly even starts until endgame in the any of the xpacs, even vanilla

Endgame in WoW always has been rather lackluster btw. Before long you end up jumping from crate to crate in Ironforge waiting for raid timers because you got nothing to really do.

What big MMOs have even come out in the last five years? The steady stream of WoW killers ended in GW2/Tera/TOR coming out, but that was over five years ago. The only notable MMO launch I can think of is Real Reborn, which is still like four years ago and TES online which was 3.5 years ago. And then, literally nothing.
