I am currently dabbling in ESO as a templar and when it comes to random dungeons I have a healer build going. I usually get into a groups fast because no one wants to play as a healer. Its great just spamming healing spells from a distance while the others do all the dirty work for me. The fun part is that I made my character a fat, short, balding, middle aged man.

I'm glad other people enjoy this role because I honestly don't know how to have fun with it. It's either boring or confusing depending of the game.

Last time I tried to heal was on FFXIV. There are so many buttons to pay attention to, and when you think you finally got used to the basic part of your kit you get surprise damage spikes and people having random suicidal crisis, and the collection of delays between pressing a button and actually healing a target (button press, connection latency, cast time, animation, healing effect) makes the whole process really uncomfortable. Plus there is this awkward "downtime" where there is nothing going on so you can attack the enemies or die from boredom, but I'm always scared that a super damage out of nowhere or someone's mistake will put everyone in danger and I'm too busy locked on my attack animation process to save people, adding more steps to the "whole collection of delays".
It's really not fun at all.

I had the same problem. I was used to Ragnarok Online where Heal came out instantly so you could do it in a pinch. Cure's cast time adding a couple seconds of delay to every heal really screwed with me when I tried it.

When we were still in the days where a new MMO would be released every three months or so, I'd play whatever class I hadn't played in the previous one.
Healer was fun, everybody was always thankful. Tank was also great, felt good being the wall that protected the whole party.
Ranged was kinda meh. Felt like I wasn't really doing much.
Worst by all means was the rogue/assassin/DPS based on crits or luck.
It's always an edgy character and isn't really that reliable.

I haven't played a MMO in years, but yes I did, they are often competent enough for soloing in both PvE and PvP and people will always invite you for pretty much anything. Back when I played wow I was a tank main and had had a pocket healer pretty much from a month in. We played for years and had really good chemistry but I ended up quitting and losing contract with them. I started playing mmos again and realized I wasn't the godlike carry I thought I was, i just had an incredible header so now I heal to pick up the slack. I would go back but once you start healing everyone just wants you to heal and you're never get blamed for anything. There are times when I enjoy the healslut meme too.

Tanking is my favorite but is only fun in games that do it well, like WoW.

In XIV though, healing is way better. It's like DPS but your role actual has a degree of sway/respect and what you do has visible results, and what you're doing is a bit unpredictable, unlike DPS where you just wail on the boss as the bar gets lower and lower.

DPSimpletons are the worst class of player, never forget that.

Every class has a combo system and multiple oGCD abilities for weaving through your rotation.
WoW has a lot of spamming of 2 or 3 abilities, with the rest of your skills available being situational.
In terms of knowing how to play your class, XIV's skill floor is lower, and it's skill ceiling is higher.

I played tank through FFXIV: A Realm Reborn and DPS through Heavensward, then started leveling up a healer. The amount of babysitting involved as a healer was ridiculous. True healer nigga right here. Even with MMOs being instanced trash and barely seeing people I still try to heal and buff other players. I remember playing flyff long ago and that was an MMO where the bufffs were so potent they were basically mandatory and people would charge because the buffs are so good and in the middle of a negotiation I would take my ringmaster and give basically the higher tier buffs for free. Charging to do your role is cancer. My buffs were such an high level when they revamped they system they allocated extra points for people that had higher level skills and I had a ton extra. There are some world drops (items than can drop from any mob in a certain zone in some level range), mostly from Vanilla, that are ridiculosuly rare. There's nothing difficult about getting them, other than having to grind a certain mobs for hours to end.
With the popularity of gold farming streamers more people have become aware of these items and they're being more actively farmed so you can probably find them on the AH from time to time now, but still.

Healers in most cases are enablers, with AST being the one that offers the most to a full party, which is why I play the role. I found that during my time as a MNK pre-4.0 was incredibly lackluster and found the quality of other healers severely lacking.

I don't think it's particularly fun to play a healer per se, considering the amount of information you have to juggle, but I feel that holding things together (and having the opportunity to decide whether someone's worth picking off the floor) is a more enjoyable experience than getting yelled at for not being able to hold the attention of the enemies as a tank.

I swear to god I scream inside every time some dumbfuck uses LB3 as a DPS and we wipe not moments after it.

Lakshmi and Susano EX are the easiest extreme primals on release. My static regularly clear both with one random we sell to, who usually kills themselves at the beginning of the fight, and only one healer for more DPS.
