Emulating this after a thread on /v/ and holy shit, this game is amazing.
>that combat system

Why aren't more turn-based combat systems like this?
>>
Because people would rather say turn-based combat is outdated rather than look at all of the games that have tried to improve on the formula.

Actually the thing I liked the most was the leveling system. It was pretty cool how they worked the alchemy sytem into the level progression.
>>
>>384247851

It's a damn shame. I mean, didn't FF15 prove to normies how shallow action-based combat is in comparison?

>>384247998

Agreed. There was no real "ding you leveled up" thing at all. Instead it felt like the better you did at school with your alchemy the stronger of an alchemist you became. There is a certain beauty to being able to tie something like that together.
>>
>>384248049
Well, there's a reason why there's virtually no discussion of FFXV's gameplay less than a year after it came out. But it sold, so expect more of the same from the VII remake.
>>
>>384247649
What settings did you use? Or just followed the wiki's advice?
>>
>>384248231

Does anyone even talk about FF15 at all anymore? Even during peak hours I rarely see a thread about it except to laugh at the game's FPS counter.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

And here Mana Khemia is this untouched gem that very few people know about or even played... a damn shame.
>>
While I thought that Mana Khemia 1 had the better characters, Mana Khemia 2 only improved on the gameplay aspect. If you didn't play it yet I can only reccomend it.
>>
It's been on my backlog since it was released.
>>
>>384248562

I didn't really enjoy the characters as much in MK2, but that's just me. That being said I won't argue that in most other areas MK2 was a step up.

There's something so inherently comfy about playing these "Harry Potter: Lawmower Simulator" games.

At least im find it funny when playing Ulrika's route. The two old men really steal the spotlight

especially when Pepperon takes on reicher in the last chapter
>>
I loved the monsters in Mana Khemia. There were no goblins, no orcs, and no generic shit. Okay there were slimes, but come on.
>>
Do monsters in this game drop better loot or more cash at night?

Is there any reason I should be in a dungeon when night rolls around?
>>
I loved using Roxis in battle
>attacks with cards
>card whip when you progress his attacks
>using Purify to fuck with enemy turn cards and their hazards
>using his skill to pull all the empty turn cards from the top of the screen and use them for a high damage skill
>his Mana was not only the easiest to get (the contract just required him to be nice to Vayne) but was easily the strongest (next to Flay's badass Mana)
>best attack/defense assists
>hype as fuck Finishing Move

This game's version of Pamela was pretty neat too, but Roxis had her beat in every
>>
>>384249276
cmiiw they do drop better/different loot on the night in the second game, but i forget if it applied since the 1st game

Mana Khemia is Atelier. And it sold like shit.
>>

This. But with Persona's recent success I'd wager Gust wants to try out the highschool setting once more and see if affects sales.
>>
>>384251572

That's not really his point though. Mana Khemia kinda' spun into it's own thing with the sequel.

>>
>>384247649
>Why aren't more turn-based combat systems like this?
Because it takes careful planning, but in combat system design and enemy encounter design, in order for it to work well. Most companies throwing together a JRPG just want something simple to keep people busy, so they don't put much effort into their combat systems.

I didn't play much of two, but its hard to compare to a game with this man in it.
>>
>>384251368
He becomes a professor in the sequel i think. I hated his obnoxious Joey Wheeler Brooklyn accent and his Mana was fucking stupid
>ow the edge, mana of Darkness

Renee's Mana was also pretty stupid looking, but canonwise she was loads stronger than her partner. I think the only thing holding her back was how lazy she was. I had a hard time fighting her and her Mana since I'd panic when she got into her charging stance for her special and end up getting thrashed by her Mana (early game anyway, Pamela made the rematch a fucking breeze)

>All games past the first Mana Khemia are pure garbage as the gameplay, fun though it may be, remains driven by the characters and the characters become pure festering shit in latter titles
>All Atelier games are now is pedobait no-brainer shit with no actual redeeming qualities beyond the quality of their artwork and they just keep shitting more and more half-assed shit every title
>>
>>384253186

No, not really. The big deal is the card system at the top-left of of the screen.

Your moves determine when you get to act again, and there's tons of manipulation to when you move, when your enemies move, what buffs/debuffs are incoming, and which timed attacks will strike where.

A good player can beat the shit out much tougher enemies. While a bad player will get wrecked by basic shit. It requires actual brainpower to get the most out of.
>>
>>384253186
Then play Final Fantasy XII if you want a JRPG that doesn't require you to do this (once you have the right gambits).
>>
>>384253331
dont forget the bug fest
>>
>>384253186
You clearly don't understand how it works then. Did you not notice the battle order at the top of the screen? There are abilities that can directly affect the order, allowing for more strategies. And f course you're going to choose attacks, how else would you fight?
>>
>>384253451
I just asked dont be passiveaggressive about your childrens toys anon

>>384253413
So basicly atb from ff6
>>
>>384253648
>So basicly atb from ff6

I don't know if you quite understand. This isn't an ATB-based game. It's a turn-based game. The speed of which you input commands doesn't effect anything.

Planing ahead is what gets you results, not speed.
>>
>>384253331
To think people used to sing praises the totori game back then.
Gust sure went from mediocre to shit quickly

>>384253975

This. It was a clear step down from MK1 (IMO) but a slight step down from "amazing" is still "great".

Thanks for your time anon but i dont play enough turn based games to fully understand and appreciate. I thought it would be something radical like paper mario or southpark where you need to time your inputs since its the only turn based combat i can bear. I was wrong, hav a nice day

>being nice to each other

Fuck off. We're on /v/. You newfags need to insult each other for not liking what you like.
>>
>>384253716
How is this different from other generic JRPGs of this era like Final Fantasy X and Grandia series or even Atelier Iris 2+3?
>>
>>384254384
It is similar to FFX, except there are more ways to interact with turn order, and switching characters in and out is encouraged more than "I specialize in doing damage to this enemy"
>>
>>384254384

Read the thread Anon. I bring your attention to: >>384253413

The entire game is centralized around delaying your turn, moving your turn up, delaying the enemy, making sure effects occur when you want/need them to and making sure you get your actions from the right characters at the right time.

It's a lot more strategic than it sounds, but it's probably the peak of turn-based combat because it actually forces you to strategize and constantly think about not only your move, but what effects are coming, what the enemy might do and when they might do it.
>>
>>384254384
Grandia has the ATB system, so it much differ than manakhemia

Manakhemia offers several skills that could manipulate turns, skill that could has it OWN turns when activated, and the ability to change with the substitute members at the same time when you attacking to chain with the respective characters' support attack or just before an enemy attack will land to the one of your character in order to protect them

And not to mention the balancing is quite well done aside of the MC in the 1st game, while the two MC in the second game is not so much OP but still versatile in most of situations
>>
>>384252320

Sulpher was top-tier.

You probably haven't even experienced the full potential of MK1 battle system, the final element unlocks way late in the game.
With all elements available, it truly is the best turn-based battle system ever. Even regular battles in the final areas are orgasmic.

Mana Khemia 2 is better in the regard that everything is unlocked much earlier. Too bad the best battles in that game come in the true ending where you can choose any character to your party, it just takes 90 hours to get there.
>>
>>384247649
>Why aren't more turn-based combat systems like this?

Because turn-based combat is a lot harder to make than action-based combat.

Hear me out. In action-based combat the devs can blame a lot on "player skill". Like "oh this fight is actually really balanced, you just didn't dodge at the right time" or "oh, he's actually a tough enemy you just out-played him".

Turn-based combat can't get away with that. If the player is clever enough, he can conclude the optimal strategy and execute it without any real "skill requirements" (except brainpower), meaning that game has to be balanced around some players figuring out said strategy faster than others.

The game should also give subtle hints as to what this strategy is so that non-clever players can at least emulate parts of it.
>>
>>384253331
Up until Meruru things were still okay for the most part. Escha and Logy is also pretty great but the rest are kinda shit.
