FF8 is of course animeish, but it had a realistic approach, enough to generate a blacklash even in japan to the models wich was more aimed to westaboos than the usual consumer of jrpg.

Also, there was the rumor about how sony was asking to developers to produce more broad artstyle in order to use the products in foreging markenting.

Only the monster models in VIII look good, and half of it comes from the superb animation. VIII is perhaps too ambitious compared to the amount of performance Square could squeeze out of PS1 at that point in time.

FF9 wanted to bring back old ideas. Even the battle theme is has the classic FF tune.
