Battlefield lets you customize weapons, and all customizations have a purpose.
idk about BF1 though, not played it.

The weapon customisation is great but I can't help dislike the game because it's essentially DayZ on smaller maps with no zombies right now. The community is pretty cancerous and there's barebones in the way of player interaction.

There was a multiplayer FPS in the early 2000's that let you add all kinds of mods to your guns and I believe it was among the first ones to do so but I could never recall it's name

BF1 has no weapon customization but instead variants for most weapons. the MP 18 for example comes in three variants, a full auto SMG, a full SMG with optics, and an experimental variant with optics and is set to burst fire only

Gmod has some great mods for you to customize weapons.

I think Ghost Recon series has a good customization as well. I can't remember the name of the game, but you could just dissemble and assemble the gun.
