When I'd learned kana in a classroom environment the backwards sentences and fucked grammar made sense to me, but later on when I started reading Japanese text it all REALLY bled together; it's legible, but it's annoying as fuck to parse sentences.
Doesn't help that it feels so unbelievably unnecessary to just not have any sort of spacing.

Japanese doesn't need spaces because of how words are conjugated. Often commas are put in for emphasis as well. Hiragana and Katakana are easy as fuck to learn and are literally the same sounds and often extremely similar in appearance.

The two basic alphabets can be easily learned within a couple of weeks, they are fucking easy.

Japanese grammar is also some of the EASIEST shit in the universe. Seriously, they might have the simplest grammar in the world right after turkish.
Three times (present, past perfect and past continuous), no cases, no declension. It has virtually no exceptions and the grammar is highly regular. Grammar structures are shared among word classes. Word order is so strict that once you get a hang of it, you literally cannot fuck it up.

There are only four things that are difficult with Japanese: Kanji due to their irregular and complex nature (multiplicity of readings, irregular compounds), proper politeness systems and their contextuality, and huge variety of regional dialects.
That is all. Everything else is easy as fuck.

What you mean is lack of spacing. And that is nowhere nearly as hard as you think: it's just a matter of getting used to.
Really, the only problem is Kanji. Which IS the most illogical and bizarrely complex writing system ever invented by a man. I'm not joking around: the way that Japanese use Kanji is insane: it's actually much easier to learn the 4000+ regular-use symbols in Mandarin then it is to learn 1000+ jouyou kanji in Japanese.

It does. It takes six years of mandatory education in Japan for most of their kids to get a decent grasp on common use kanji. There is no easy way. You just study every day, and you actually read and write every day. And it takes years. There is literally no shortcut around it.

You can use cards for the first few hundred, but eventually you'll get to a point where you'd be carrying a fucking suitcase of those around.

Japanese literature is second pretty much only to Russian (which is where a lot of the classic japanese authors actually drew their inspiration).

You can scream something about "weeboo" all you want. I actually don't really give two fucks about japanese popculture: I've stopped caring for anime ten years ago, I never even played Japanese games to begin with, and I have no delusions or idealism about what is going in that country.
But I do know my shit when it comes to language and literature. World-wide. And Japanese do have some really, really amazing library of classic literature. Always had, actually. All the way back to Shikibu. If you want some more historical works, I'd recommend Saikaku and Monzaemon though.

I know it's a bold claim, but it is substantiated. Get your hands on some of these. Read Black Rain by Ibuse: arguably the best actual fucking representation major war tragedy I've ever seen (compare it to say, Schindler's List, Nightingale, Kindly Ones or Crabwalk).
Or read Abe's Woman in Dunes or Face of Another - there is a good reason why Abe is called "The Better Franz Kafka".

Meanwhile, Kawabata's Izu No Odoriko and Voice of the Mountain are some of the most beautifully subtle shit you'll ever read. If you add Tanizaki's Diary of Mad Old Man, you'll also find some absolutely amazing meta-narrativity and binarity of perspectives. And Akutagawa completes what Poe started.

The old stereotype of Japs ripping off other nations culture and transforming it into their own unique thing applies to their literature maybe more than anywhere. A lot of these authors (Abe, Akutagawa, Tanizaki in particular) do basically adapt styles of other authors and then perfect them. But they do it in such a way where any negative implications that carries is gone.

Every single one of these authors offers about as much as people like Kurosawa or Mizoguchi offered to cinema. It's just that the west ignores them. Just like they tend to ignore a LOT of amazing literature from central and eastern europe or southern americas.

Anyway, if you are interested, I really strongly recommend picking up at least some of the authors I've mentioned. Japs like their texts usually very short: TONS of short stories, even the novels rarely go about 120 pages. And if translated well (don't know much about english translations of these authors, sadly), they are very easy to read.

I think Akutagawa is a particularly good author for people who aren't even into classic literature. He really is a bit like Poe: very morbid, visceral, evocative (Rashomon and Image of Hell are two short stories particularly popular among young people), poignant, but still very beautiful.

Plus you get the benefit of bragging rights, which is sure to get you credit among hipsters. But really: it's just an amazing read.
And if you are pedo, I recommend Little Dancing Girl of Izu by Kawabata, or "Stolen Child" by Shiga.

I read translations as well (not English ones, though). I think the two authors are very, VERY different. Borges is a LOT smarter. Like - incomparably so. But at the same time, his literature is heavily based around insane intellectual toys and masturbations. Borges used to make fun of Marquez, saying that he personally thinks writing 1000+ pages of a book around an idea that could be summed up on five pages is self-indulgent wankery (not his exact words...)

But it does pretty much sum the differences. Borges wrote INSANELY clever and INSANELY DENSE texts, but if you are more after the mood, more after the language and the text itself, rather than after the intellectual ideas conveyed by the text, Marquez is definitely the better choice. I like Borges'es style, but it's quite a literally a textual concentrate. His best story has three fucking paragraphs.

I chose Borges for that example list mostly because Marquez is also actually famous. Unlike Borges, Cortazar or Carpentier, who are mostly ignored completely in general education.

Historical?
Well, Ibuse. He has a whole bunch of short-ish stories that are actually meticulously historically accurate. He has a very... particular style though. His stories are NOT about plot. You just have to embrace that. They don't have beginings or ends, they don't have a classical dramatic structure. He is called "God of Detail": with insanely fantastic ability to construe space and characters, but he just does not even BOTHER with classic dramatic ark.

That said, look Waves: Two Novel's by him. One is a story of a young noble boy in war of Minamoto and Taira clans, the other is a true historical story of a Japanese Castaway during Edo period ending in the services of Americans.

He also has a whole bunch of smaller historical tales. I again don't know much about english releases and translations, but I could list the jap names of the stories if you want. (cont, there is more).

Also, if you don't mind recent history: Ibuse's Black Rain is about the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima, and it's ENTIRELY based on actual diaries of graphomaniac man who survived that event. While Ibuse added some stylistical and small details, the whole actual story is based almost entirely on real historical account. It's... beyond words how good it is. Though... again, translation could harm a lot of it, I don't know much about the english version.

Aside from Ibuse, there is a famous author called Shusaku Endo, who mainly focuses on the introduction and persecution of Christians in medieval Japanese history. "Samurai" and "Silence" are probably his two best historical works.

Akutagawa's Rashomon and Image of Hell are also set in historical settings. Both are longer short stories.

And then there is probably the most fucking famous Japanese historical tale:
Eiji Yoshikawa's Musashi. Well over 1000 pages or highly romanticized Samurai epic that pretty much established all the Japanese historica and samurai tropes as we know it. I don't like it - I like my text short and elegant, and Yoshikawa isn't either of those. But it's definitely good if you want samurai drama.

Then, if you want actual historical literature (as in written in the past, not written about past), then Tale of Prince Genji is basically 11th century Pride and Predjudice, Pillow Diaries are basically 12th century facebook account of a average Japanese noble BIMBO.
I like Iharu Saikaku's "The Life of an Amorous Man" and "The Life of an Amourous Woman", two great, very ironic and satirical books about life of Edo-period Dandies and Whores. It's absolutely great for something written in 17th century.

On the same subject, there is a theatrical writer, Chikamatsu Monzaemon. He wrote several hundred short plays and has been dubbed "Japanese Shakespear" (same type of mislabel as calling Miyazaki "Japanese Disney).
He has great stories about Edo-period urban life, whores and suicides.

Naoya Shiga wrote just a handful of short stories, I think most of them were released as >Paper Doors and other stories
Very subtle, melancholic tales about minor details of life.

Kobo Abe did not really read romantic tales, but he is similar to Murakami in his more profound fascination with both magical/surreal, and their shared obsession with Franz Kafka.
He has two great books:

They are... they can be frustrating at times. You really need to read them up till the very end, because it's usually the last few pages where the whole story comes together. OK, if you don't mind blog. For the others in the thread - please ignore following.
I was always a massive reader (read Dostoyevsky when I was 13 and Borges when I was 15... - not that I understood them at the time, but always felt like literature is my calling).
When I was 15, I discovered anime and became a weeboo for a while. My family was very strict and conservative, and my father found that degenerate Japanese shit mostly repulsive (he only admited that Miyazaki is OK...), but they kinda issued a deal to me:
They won't say a word about my degenerate hobby, but under the condition that I don't limit myself to pop-culture, and that I will start learning about Japan in wider context - their history, language, classic literature, so that in the end I take at least something valuable from it.
Over time, I found myself quickly growing out of anime, but the literature did stuck with me.
Eventually a traveled and lived in Japan for a while, lost last of my delusions about the country, found even more appreciation for literature in general, continued to search for more good books - Japanese or otherwise.

That is about the whole story.

Yeah. While I CRINGE at the memory of who I was at one point, I have to say that I don't regret going through that phase. It opened my horizons a lot, it was in many ways invaluable. It's mostly thanks to my parents, my father in particular. He was the one who said "fine, be a weeboo - but here is a stack of books about Japan and here is a Japanese tutor and I'm gonna kill you if you don't work your ass off studying those in the process."
And that is how you best deal with your kids faggotry, by the way. If you ever plan to have any.

I never found it particularly difficult to juggle literature and games. Unless you get actually addicted to some shit (I just lost 500 hours of my life to fucking Factorio - two months of not reading at all!), it's just a matter of basic routine. Don't turn on your computer before reading 20+ pages on that day. It will at worst set you back half an hour, and at best you end up engrossed in the book and happy.
Works for writing or any creative work, too. Just set the computer to be last in your daily harmonogram: give yourself minimum time (half-an-hour usually is enough) of other stuff you want to do before you turn on the computer.

Worked for me, when I was not in depression, at least.

Reading before bed is something that actually does not really work for me. It's good to read before some other activity that you don't have to do, but kinda want to. When I read before bed, I frequently end falling asleep, often taking ages to get through the book. It's neat for books that you just enjoy (I usually open books that I've already read in the past this way).

But for me it works best when I have all "chores" and actual work done, but before I go do something completely mindless like playing games or watching silly movies or shows.

Because that way, if you don't get engrossed, you'll still get at least those 20 pages done before going to entertain yourself. And if you do, you can extend and read for another two hours without sacrificing sleep, but also without being cut off mid-way through by falling asleep accidentally.

That said: I DO kinda read for living. While I enjoy it most of the time, there is also plenty of times when I need to read something because it's kinda an obligation. So I have to account for that - those 20 pages a day is pretty much something I have to do even if I don't particularly feel like it. So I tailored the routine to that - so that I'd get my "minimum quota" regardless of how I feel about it.

Works out for me. I get through about three books monthly, which is quite enough considering that I have both studies and a, uh, "job".

My record was 12 books over the course of three days. And I still remember most of them, ten years later.
That is what happens when you learn that your entrance exams (which mostly hinge on your reading portfolio) are not next month, as you though, but next week.
Granted, most of it was Japanese literature, so not particularly long works, but still. Ended up with literary psychosis (after reading Ibuse's Black Rain, I temporarily experienced state in which I was unable to differenciate properly between reality and the fiction. Given that the book is about bombing of Hiroshima, it was not a pleasant experience. Actually, hiragana and katakana are pretty much more logical and easier to use than english use of latin. It's strictly and reliably phonetical and more economic, as they need a single symbol, usually with as many strokes as a single latin letter, to convey an entire syllable.
Compare it to the clusterfuck that is english or french spelling (one being completely irregular, the other using up to five symbols to convey absense of a sound...)
That said, any semblance of actual logic ends when you start learning kanji.
