That ally was gonna lose regardless. Up to that point the Northern Kingdoms were falling one by one. Radovid changed that by doing what it was necessary to survive. What's even better for Radovid is that the North just needed to survive the invasion and they win by default. Nilfgaard was falling apart at that point. The nobility didn't like their king.
