It has the right outputs but it looks like ass with the images blown up to fit the screen. Considering getting pic related since I heard it helps the resolution.

Emulate from a PC to your TV. If you don't have at least a mid tier PC then wow anon.
>>
>>384183340

fuck off
>>
>>384182978
buy a ps3, jailbreak it, use the internal ps2 and go nuts.
>>
>>384182978
Get that, or if your TV has component in (which it probably won't?) get one of those PS2 to component adapters.

Progressive scan helps a lot with the blurriness

actually it does have component

yeah you get a crt.

I don't have the spare room to jam a crt in.

I've considered emulation and my laptop could do it but I want to get value out of the ps2 games I bought.

Then you put your disc in to your laptop and emulate using the disc.
>>
>>384182978
a ps2 is only 480p so remember that, you can only go so far. component to display and toslink to a receiver is about as good as it gets. if it looks weird its because your tv is doing some sort of upscaling so check the options there.

of course you could always just use your ps2 discs in a pc and emulate from there....
>>
>>384182978
PS2 is going to look like ass on a HDTV no matter what. The games were designed to be played on 4:3 CRTs.
>>
>>384184607
I didn't know that was an option......um, how does that work?
>>
>>384184607
The PS2 had 720p and 1080i games retard with widescreen support

That's just a transcoder, not a scaler, poorly built, and single-purpose. We can do, a LOT better. Wanna do it right? Here is how.

First, you want to get a good set of component cables, aka official Sony ones or PS2/3 ones from Monoprice. Do NOT cheap out and get a 6 dollar set off ebay with thin cables or anything by komodo because with analog cables, quality matters. Also, don't get "universal" console component cables, as that will kill signal and introducing ringing.

Next, you need a component to HDMi transcoder, NOT a scaler. why not a scaler? If you're gonna get one, we're talking 500 bucks for a good chain of components, and if you cheap out on this, you will introduce ringing and lag. That or stretch out the image with no asect control! A transcoder will simply convert analog to digital in nanoseconds, so no lag and clean signal. Fudoh at Shmups forum has a GREAT buyers guide if you wanna read up in the future @ http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de , but for now pick up something like a cheap Lenkeng LKV354 which can be found under 40 bucks.

Now, do you have other consoles that use component? If so, get a powered component switcher, connect that to the transcoder, and connect the consoles to the switcher.

Now, the MOST important thing you need it to feed 480p to your TV, to minimize lag and improve output quality. There are homebrew methods, but the easiest and most compatible way by far is with the Xploder HDTV Player boot disc. You can find one under 20 bucks, and it not only lets you force 480P on everything, but allows you to move the images around and remove safe area.

So yeah. there you go. Since it's actual hardware with no emulator lag and full compatibility, there is no better way to play PS2 games than on actual PS2 hardware, over transcoded component, forced at 480p with this method.

If you wanna learn more, you can ask me, or reach out to me or Dash on /vr/. Dash is very knowledgable.

I'd just buy a launch model PS3 that has PS2 backwards comparability and use that

Or you could emulate it on any modern pc at 4x the original resolution with no problems for 99% of games.

>>
>>384185991
And saves?

original peripherals?

And PS2 emulation has come some ways, but the current state of HLE is still full of compromises and tedious tasks, like waiting for discs to dump, and buying so many proprietary adapters to get all peripherals to work.

You can do it right, or you can do it with compromises, that's on you, but don't push emulation as the end-all because it's far from it, even at this stage.

if you want to use a real ps2, use a softmoded ps2 with GSM (along with widescreen pqtches if needed) and component cables

There is absolutely nothing wrong with 480p. you know, there's very little wrong with any non-interlaced resolution. All Games can look stunning on modern TVs, even classic ones, even though it sometimes requires some effort.

4th gen and below you can get away with emulating, I'll give you that one, but even with real hardware, you have things like the OSSC, XRGB and other hardware to connect things to modern sets directly.

With the 5th gen, it gets tricky. Playstation games on TV can be done over component with PS2, PS3, Vita TV, or PSP Go, but the rest of the consoles are tricky. If you have a Jaguar, 3DO, or Saturn, you'lll need to invest in a Framiester. For N64, you should get a HDMI mod. All 5th gen handhelds have gotten to a point where emulation is acceptable, so that's not a problem (just like all consoles and handhelds below 5th gen).

6th gen isn't too hard. GCN can be played at 480p glory on Wii U and Wii (Wii U is best because you can feed it at whatever your display's native res is), and PS2 and Xbox just need at most cables and a boot disc. Dreamcast needs either a VGA to HDMI transcoder and a HANZO or an Akura. As for 6th-gen handhelds, emulate away.

7th gen all connects to HDMI anyways thanks to Wii BC on Wii U, PSP support on Vita TV, and DS games on Wii U, and as far as 8th gen goes, the ONLY thing you can't play on a TV are 3DS and N3DS games... that's it.

You truly CAN make any game look nice on a modern TV, and I mean ANY game with the exception of 3DS titles... and that is amazing.

Buy a Sony trinitron with component inputs you scrub. I did it and I will never go back to LCD on retro consoles again.
>>
>>384182978
just buy some good component cables. avoid the cheap chinese ones if you can, go for the official cables or monster.

PS2 doesn't look bad at all on my HDTV. even 480i looks fine.
>>
>>384185252
if you're spending hundreds of dollars on uncompromising best quality, you should use RGB instead of component.
and you do NOT want to force 480p on everything, because on many games it will look worse than 480i because of how the game renders.

get a TV with a better scaler / videochip

i don't mean big in a literal sense, I don't know. I always thought that idiom or whatever you call it meant to get better. I don't really know. Here's my TV, that other one I just saved it.
>>
>>384191224
i bought the monster gamelink component cables since they were cheaper for me than the official ones (and obviously well built because they're monster), just look on ebay or amazon. shouldn't be hard to filter your search to certain manufacturers, and if someone is a dick and sends you chinkshit just send it back.
i'm having a hard time finding good xbox component cables though.
>>
>>384192006
Well I bought the component A/V adaptor for Xbox a year ago for the equivalent of $35 bucks but it was from a mexican online store. Don't know if I can get the PS2/PS3 component cables for the same price or less.

>Considering getting pic related since I heard it helps the resolution.

You can't upscale standard definition images like that. They're always going to look stretched out. And using a scaler just adds more latency.

Have you tried component cables, and setting your TV to standard definition format?
>>
>>384182978
All that is doing is converting component video to HDMI. It doesn't help the resolution if you aren't already using component cables.

I had one for the wii and it made green lines appear everywhere. And if it doesn't have an external power source I wouldn't trust it since it probably doesn't get enough from the video port.

In the very end you're still blowing up 480p on a 1080p tv so it's gonna look like ass since built-in scalers are garbage. Get a really expensive scaler, a CRT, or just deal with it.

ideally you want a 20 inch that supports RGB, then a scart to bnc adaptor (either euro scart or jp21 whatever you pick stick to that kind) then the appropriate scart cables for the system of your choice.

>>
>>384199165
difference between component and rgb:

component has red on red, blue on blue, and sync on green and assumes whatever is not blue or red must be green.

rgb has red on red, blue on blue, and green on green, with a seperate sync cable resulting is so assumption made by the tv and it knows EXACTLY what the white balance on the colors needs to be.

tldr: clarity should be about the same but colors will be significantly more accurate without fiddling with settings to make it look good.
