There were more "that moments" in HL2 and the episodes desu. I only disliked On a Rail and all of xen. Maybe residue processing too if I'm being honest
>>

>>
>>384182980
Also now that I know you can skip all of Office Complex with that grenade trick I can't not do that anymore and it kind of bums me out.

Underage Simulator. You should play it.
>>
>>384182849
I literally just stopped at this point the other day and am totally unwilling to keep going.
>>
I played HL a year ago and found myself pretty much using tricks to get past every point. Avoided fighting half the enemies in the game, didn't even fight the big tentacle boss, just jumped off the monorail thing and ran past traps, etc

Then it all bit me in the butt when I got to the final area of the game and had to actually pay attention to platforms and boss fights.

And while I liked ravenholm the first time I think that level and the area after it in the mines is a huge boring slog. Same with the highway part. Still like the bridge though. I think things really picked up when anticitizen one hits though

I blacked out drunk playing this game, when I woke up I was in another area with new weapons.

Summed it up for a lot of us. As much as HL2 was the superior game, HL1 is more enjoyable to go back and play because there's so few stick in the mud segments. Shit where you have to sit through a cutscene or let events play out while you wait. Shit that was awesome the first time and dull every other.
>>
>>384187185
I've never understood it either. You can take the tram slowly or run on the rails like a boss. Can't ask for more.
>>
>>384182980

I played it just because it was one of those 'must play' games. I didn't hate it or anything. I just found it really easy to exploit and avoid the stuff people usually have trouble with. In a way, I like the game because it allowed you the freedom to do things in multiple ways.

I can understand hating both of them before either one's gunplay is shit but liking HL2's over 1's is just retarded because at least 1 tried to keep it interesting without resorting to a dumb gimmick that only pays off in the last five minutes of the game.
>>

Woah that looks crispy.

No idea how someone can have that opinion when the arsenal in half-life 1 had such awful feeling weapons.

>rocket launcher with very little aoe that you need to reload each time
Magnum felt alright and the stachel is fun. The tau and gluon gun are good but thats it. Snarks are fun but you can only really use them effectively in like 4 points in the entire game and the alien rifle feels pointless because of how weak it is.

The start of the level is fine. But when you get to the first tower's base those enemies down there, man, are they annoying on Legendary. Am I the only person on this entire website who actually likes Deus Ex's Liberty Island? Or is "hating" it just an ironic meme like allocating skill points into swimming? I've always felt like it does an excellent job easing the player into the game's open-ended level design, provided that they play the tutorial course first to get to know the basic systems.

replaying chapter 3 is piss easy (disregarding the on rails section which is actually very hard on higher difficulties), you just put on a mask and the guards don't bother you. you can also save time (not irl time, but in-game time if you want dem ranks) by doing the resistance trick
>>
>>384205675
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the entirety of Chapter 3 'on rails' in the sense that you have to wait for the Resistance member to reach the hideout to progress with the game even if you know where it is?

What the fuck anon I usually detest forced on-rails scripted turret segments in games but the Groznyj Grad escape/Shagohod chase is one of the funnest action sequences in the MGS series unless you're going for strictly non-lethal, then fuck that whole sequence with a rusty rake.

Mega Man Battle Network 2 isn't the most polished game in the series, but it had some of the best scenarios in the whole series bar a couple. Those couple just happen to be some of the most tedious garbage in any Mega Man game. My pick's Freezeman's scenario because it has some awful pacing in it, but the Magnetman one is an honorable mention because the jacked in parts felt like they went on forever.

>>384188205
The dude who makes the unofficial patches created this vault thing you can find early on to skip the entire level.
>>384196405
It was a disappointing take on him for sure. But to me the worst parts are the padding parts around Penguin section, and when the true final villain just takes over the plot at the end.
>>384197781
Don't like it? Well, you can also just about avoid everything and quickly get to the terrorist leader, you know that, right? Get to the back of the statue, take some boxes to the giant crates, climb on them so you can reach the crate ladder, go up it, use the boxes on top to get up/jump across, easily avoid enemies as you go into the castle, stay crouched and avoid everything, BOOM! zero enemies touched you beat the level. It takes like a couple minutes at most to pull this off.
>>384198218
Depends on how much you appreciate being able to do things your own way. The solution I laid out above is only vaguely mentioned by Paul for example with the rest of the first level implying that you gotta do a head-on route. It's my favorite game of all time because I love doing stuff like that. There's other weird creative stuff you can do as well like using LAMs as platforms.
>>384204076

>TWO more fucking on-rails areas

who the fuck thought it was a good idea? if you beat volgin non-lethally then you can literally do nothing during the on-rails segments because of the cold war camo. if you do these segments perfectly, and i mean no.1 speedrunner in the world perfectly, it takes TWENTY FUCKING MINUTES. the pacing fucking dies completely. it's supposed to be a great escape sequence, but the actual gameplay is fucking trash, it's so long and tries so many different types of gameplay all at the same time and none of them are fun, and the entire sense of urgency is ruined by the loading screens between areas. i think MGS3 is one of the best games ever made but these sections are 100% fucking CANCER

1. You don't have to cold war your way through for non-lethal. As long as stuff's tranqed, even if it looks like they die in the bike segments, they won't.
2. I personally think it's great because the entire bit never gets too repetitive because it's always adding new enemies or environmental challenges for the player to consider.
>>384208741

I wish refunds would have been a thing when I bought it for the PC, I would've turned it back in on the spot.

I believe the bug was caused because the game assumed you were playing at 30 FPS (Because XBOX), so when you were on PC and getting 60, your aim slowed down to a crawl. And then if you didn't force V-Sync and were playing on an even newer machine, you pretty much had to use a controller to aim and even that was slow.

The game ironically ran better at lower framerates.

>I clearly laid out why it's not repetitive
your opinion isn't objective truth. those sections are about as riveting and diverse as a fucking arcade shooter. obviously they introduce a few different targets, but the jist is the same, the gameplay here is literally arcade tier- you aim, you shoot, your movement and enemy movement is automatic. plus, if you have the cold war camo, you literally don't even have to shoot, but just look in their general direction

oh and the shagohod battles are pretty much the same, you're just holding the RPG in first person, shooting and quick-reloading- fucking arcade tier.

idk why kojima decided you had to fight volgin THREE times. it wasn't good with liquid in 1 and it wasn't good in 3. neither of them die because of you beating them, but just by some other event. like, you beat liquid in the metal gear, beat him in a fist fight, outshoot him in the car, and then he dies from a virus. with volgin you beat him hand to hand, in the shagohod twice and then he's struck by lightning

I already did. There's always drastic change in the level design or the enemy type you have to fight to keep the entire part interesting. More button pressing doesn't mean less repetitive gameplay either, ex. a fighting game with just one character will have many button pressing but not as much variety in encounters.
>oh so glad it wasn't snake but MEMES that finally killed volgin
Or The Sorrow considering Volgin's the reason that his wife's about to get killed, the reason the rest of his squad is dead, and is a big threat to whatever will be left after that which he thinks is precious. The Kuwabara, kuwabara stuff is a Volgin character quirk which also adds irony to the scene.

You should replay MGS3, and not let "that part" hold you back since you seem to not really remember anything about the game at all.

i finished the game like 4 times, i know what the story is. the squad is dead because you killed them because the boss, ocelot and eva wanted to pretend for a little while. the story is pulpy and super lightheaded, there is no actual narrative content worth a damn, which is a shame because 2 is actually well written and very well localized

You know what annoys me the most about this? Its not that its hard, because it isn't, but its you fucks that come out of the woodwork to cry because you couldn't be assed to learn the goddamn movement system in the game. There is actually TWO ways to get up that post. If you are in the position in the screenshot, you can run up the wall, hold left and then press A to jump onto the pole. Almost every one of the assassin tombs has a tutorial on this mechanic. The other way, you can stand directly under the lantern on the rail, hold RT then press A. Your character will jump straight up and grab the end of the pole. Now to be fair, the game doesn't ever tell you to do this because you never have to, but did you honestly just never wonder what would happen if you pressed those buttons? The control UI in the corner even shows that when you only hold RT, pressing A, the legs button, will make you jump.

Fuck this game. It stopped being fun immediately when you got to that alien ship level. The zero-g gameplay inside the alien ship was kinda neat, but everything that was inarguably shit. Escort missions, shitty bullet sponge robot aliens, and no more villages to level with explosives.

I got Crysis: Warhead from summer sale and it's much better game than the base game. It too had winter levels, but they were only a small part of the game and the game was otherwise 100% ninja action. Also, the aliens fucking suck. Too generic and they look more like robots. I wish they were at least legit organic creatures instead of those stupid matrix squids with christmas lights.

*but everything AFTER that was inarguably shit.

Seriously, the 1/3 of Crysis is fucking badass. I also remember the original Far Cry having this same problem: it was fun until the mutants showed up. Yeah I can see what CryTek thought when making these games, I sometimes play military shooters and think how cool it would be if they were about shooting aliens and mutants instead of faceless-nameless terrorists. But goddamn when they sacrifice the whole game for the sake of having some aylamaos in the game. Crysis would be so much better if it kept the "sneak, kill, destroy" gameplay through the whole game. Have the later levels be about ultra intelligent alien super soldiers patrol the jungle, and you would need to sneak among them and survive. Kinda like reverse Predator.

HL2 I can't think of an actually bad chapter. I mean there's some that are clearly better than others, but nothing stands out. I like the vehicle chapters because you mostly go at your own pace and there's some light exploration in them. Episode 1 on the other hand is so jarring. As soon as I start to remember all that shit I had to do without the crowbar, all interest in revisiting it vanishes. Since I never get around to replaying Episode 1 I never revisit Episode 2.

I actually have to agree about the Vortal Combat parts. It was ultimate hype when I first played it, but on replays it doesn't hold.
>the entirety of gameplay is putting your turrets at one entrance and then standing at another and blasting antlions with infinite shotgun ammo
>you can also switch to SMG occasionally to finish them
>keep saying to myself "okay the next wave will be the real deal"
>when it finally looks like the battle is picking up vorts teleport in and kill everything in a not-cutscene

I've yet to play Steam version and the 2011 version was really short. It was okay, though. I like the key moments like dam and cliff battles, Osprey battle, I just don't like what feels like a lot of padding in pretty generic environments. But yeah, BMS team did a good job making more generic areas more distinct, like the very first tunnel from the Questionable Ethics lab exit to the dam, they put a checkpoint overrun with HECU there, which makes for a nice small battle as you first storm it and then defend briefly from another HECU squad. That was neat and I didn't expect that.

I miss some aspects though, like the return of the tentacles, I heard they re-added some of that in Steam version. Honestly, I think one big aspects I didn't like ST in original all that much is that some visuals are just pretty boring, lots of concrete tunnels there. BMS team did a good job at giving the game a facelift, though.
