If you only play the main numbered titles you'll be confused.

Chain of Memories happens between 1 & 2, and you'll be completely confused at the beginning of 2 and story stuff in 2 if you skip it.

There were a number of games to world build the series from there, and they are all canon, Dream Drop Distance being the biggest case seeing as it shows what happened to Sora after KH2, making it the Chain of Memories of KH3.

Find a wiki/youtube video and just read/watch a summary of the story. Trust me, not worth playing through the games just to catch up in time for KH3 since the spinoffs are almost all important

The PS4 collection is the most comprehensive. If you play everything there and watch the movies, you'll be set.

When people tell you to skip RE:Coded, they mean skip it because story-wise it's mostly pointless. It plays the fourth best in the series.

If you have a ps4, I strongly recommend getting kh 1.5 +2.5. It's the 6 most important games remastered for 40 bucks.

Then you have another collection 2.8, which is 1 game, 1 movie, and a 'ground zeroes'/DEMO of Kingdom Hearts 3.

Does anyone here understand the combat in Chain of Memories? Currently on the 7th floor or whatever, combat is pretty easy but what should I be prioritizing, Sleights->CP->health? What's the late game like?

Set aside your bias for a second, because the story is actually pretty interesting, yes at times it can be cheesy but it's part of the fun.
