Half Life 2 multiplayer mods.

They brought so many neat ideas and concepts to the table and had decent execution that even modern games can't seem to touch at all. It was also just a different time too for games and the people that played them.

On the top of my hand, the ones that I really liked were mods like Empires, Insurgency, Dystopia and Eternal Silence. Empires did that RTS/FPS hybrid thing on a decently sizable scale. Dystopia did their cyberpunk theme fairly well, you had classes and had to fight in the physical world and in the networks. Eternal Silence was kinda like Battlefront 2's space combat but more focused and larger in scale. Granted, most of these would be fairly buggy since they were trying really hard to make it work in the source engine.

They also had really chill communities for the most part, back in the days where you can just hop on a server and have a good time.
