Taro only did some video editing really late into the game's production. He had no hand in anything else.

Conversely, it's not as well received because since Taro didn't technically work on it people can actually see all the objective flaws with it instead of being blinded by their love for Taro and excusing everything as his wackiness.

It's like the Mad Max 3 of the series.

The main character is an insufferable shithead for the entire game, ignoring literally everyone to effectively do the same thing the evil empire from the first game did. Caim and Angelus show up as antagonists, one of the final bosses from the first game is now a protagonist, and you get a happy ending if you play it three times through. It's shit, but at least it wasn't goofy as fuck like Drakengard 3 could be.
