>play a "classic" RPG (Deus Ex, Bloodlines, Planescape: Torment etc)
>gameplay - as in actual gameplay - is catastrophically bad, it's like a shit tier FPS (in first two cases, Torment is an isometric VN) that's a pain in the ass to play)
>however if you snoop around a bit (aka look in the nooks and crannys) you find datalogs where villains for some reason write down their plans and codes in detail
>you can also invest in CHA-based skills and skip most of the encounters including literally exploding bosses by choosing dialogue prompts
>as for level design, rival gangs live 30ft from each other
>these games are praised as pinnacle of RPG systems

Am I missing something?

Games that turn Charisma into a number that "unlocks" dialogue options are shit. Same with games that assume being persuasive means being the nice guy all the time.

Some games have good use of persuasion/dialogue choices, like Deus Ex: Human Revolution. That game actually tests the player's ability to read other people and say what they want to hear.

nigger that's even worse, it tells you character traits and you need to count which one turns up the most. Those games are filled with imbecile-tier 'minigames'. At least original DX didn't make you play 'hacking' minigame that treats you like a retard.

Come to think of it, skipping gameplay isn't that bad.
