Well the boss is kind of difficult for new players with shitty characters and equipment. For most people it's the 2nd boss in the game and it's already so fast that the char has almost no chance to heal and so strong that it mostly kills the char in very few attacks plus having like 5 or 6 different attacks that in themselves can vary too.

Ultimately it was just too high a hurdle for a boss that early, especially considering how much of a pushover many of the later and by lore considerably stronger bosses are.

Been playing through sotfs recently, with the original (on PS3) having left a bad taste. I'm honestly loving it. I got my ADP up to 16 and haven't experienced any real issues with rolling. There are a few enemies that have a really small window of opportunity to get a hit in but I think it's generally improved from vanilla. The leather shield is fine for early stages until you can get the kite shield from the seller in Majula.

My real issue is that the first ~2-3 hours contains the most dull gameplay in any souls game. Boring enemies, boring bosses, no equipment. Game really begins after you kill Lost Sinner. Going through Drangleic Castle onwards with a +10 lightning greatsword has been loads of fun.

The first couple hours the game seems infinetely more difficult than ds1.
Beating the pursuer, the 3 fagets and sinner all feel extremely challenging and good.

However, after that each path basically starts of at the same difficulty as the first one and it becomes way too easy. Even the great bosses at the end of the other 3 pathes are basically just pushovers since they don't have nearly as punishing movesets as the sinner.

So all in all the game becomes almost too easy after clearing the first path.

Protip: Weapon level is actually more important than agility. Your weapon level is a flat percentage (ex. if you have 75 in long blade, that gives 75% hit chance) Meanwhile, agility only adds agility/4 to your hit chance score.

No, that's where no stats should have an effect at all. If you dodge an attack, you dodge it. Enemy attacks should automatically snap on to you, you should be teleported to the end of their weapon, and you shouldn't take damage mid roll when you're clearly out of their LoS.

If agility made you roll further or something, that's a little different, but we're talking purposely butchering and sabotaging the players roll mechanic to make room for another stat which isn't right.

Dark Souls 2 is so shit you can cheese most of the bosses by just spamming projectiles. The other Souls games pre Bloodborne had this issue too but in DaS2 its just insane, none of the bosses even try and stop you. I feel like this was somehow part of the game's design, given some of the buttfuckingly dumb enemy placement.

Pursuer is probably one of the best casual filters in gaming now that I think about it.

Tomb of the giants was great. I don't know why it gets shit on all the time. It has an interesting mechanic that changes up gameplay, a challenging set of enemies unique to that area and not reskins. Interesting NPC encounters. Worthwhile items. A nice view of Demon Ruins and Ash Lake. Atmospheric as fuck. Nito is a bit underwhelming, but he's by no means the worst boss.

DS 2 is an embarrassment to the souls series. They had to re-release it to patch up how horribly broken and unfinished it was but even then only ended up polishing a turd.

If DS2 wasnt pushed by namco for sales fromsoft would have probably moved on to bloodborne and then straight on to whatever it is they're making now. I think the fact that bloodborne was released mere months after DS 2 show the difference in quality to an actual miyazaki/Fromsoft product.

DS2 isnt just a bad souls game its a bad game period. It looks and plays like an early access release and gets almost everything wrong that the original and Demon's souls got right.

I think another show of how much of a travesty DS2 was is how all of the big Darksouls youtubers just kind of rushed through it's lore to get it out of the way.

The game failed in so many ways that so many people have articulated but i still think people need to know how bad it is. Seeing people defending it on here is just confusing to me. I really dont understand how /v/ doesnt universally hate this game.

You've written all this without detailing any arguments. Sure it's a "cash grab", just as every sequel is unless there was more that one in mind from the start. Sure it has its faults, but they tried to make a proper sequel that evolved the franchise. Did they succeed? Probably not, but there's a lot of neat little touches here and there. PvP arenas (I don't even play PvP but it's cool that they accommodated those players), lockstones and fragrant branches are nice additions alongside better build variety and I personally find the movement system more fluid. The faults people talk about are all valid. Do I think they detract from the game enough to make me hate it? Absolutely not.

In the case of lockstones, they function a little like chests in that they may be a trap, and they set up the Doors of Pharros area which, while short, is a cool little area of the game. With fragrant branches there's also a strategic element in that you may unlock a useful bonfire, boss, shortcut or extra item but they are short in supply so you need to decide whether you really need to use it in the area you're in.

How did you deal with durability? That was one of the worst aspects of the game, the fact that high damage but slow weapons were the best because low damage weapons would just fucking break because you had to hit the enemy more often. And repair powder is rare and really expensive. And upgrade items were not very abundant so you could just upgrade a bunch of weapons.

There's a serious difference between something like a top down RPG and a FPS RPG, and you can't use the concepts of hit accuracy from the former in the latter without some modification.

An example of how to do it well is to have your swings be sloppy or visibly not land where you aim them, just like your archery skill might be sloppy and the arrows not land where you aim them.

If something is presented on screen (your knife or arrow hits an enemy) but game feedback is telling you another (MISS, MISS, MISS); it's just bad game design. The rules your eyes and ears use have to match with the game mechanics. If two objects touch, they can't clip or miss magically. To do otherwise is to break the rules of logic.

I don't remember the Way of White being involved with protecting Nito, but it makes sense in that context since they've got direct links to the gods. I just assumed they sent their members with the Dark Sign on pilgrimage because the gods want them to play the game
As for helping Gwyn, it's because there's no death in an age of grey. No death means no Nito.
His disinterest in the collapse of the Age of Fire probably comes from him being weakened physically by the Pinwheels draining his power, and metaphorically by the dead rising up

In enjoyed it, but it was annoying at times, enemy ganks every two steps, shitty hitboxes, some of the worst areas in all the series like shrine of amana, black gulch, harvest valley, the fucking path to get to the blue smelter demon, and the fucked up level transition from earthen peak to the iron keep, pointless mechanics like pharros stones, torch system that nobody liked.

Not a bad game but definitely the weakest in the series.
