The story is there to an extent, and the music and presentation are also fairly nice at points. If that's what you're interested in, then there will be payoff, but early game really REALLY blows. Gil has few uses outside of being an investment for leveling your crafting or gathering classes (the former more so than the latter). You will never have to grind or spend time making money as long as you stick to one job so exp isn't split up between several. Just follow the main story and be sure to do any sidequests with a + on the quest icon along the way, as they unlock stuff like optional dungeons.

The story will be boring for a while longer, but be sure to pay attention anyway, as the worldbuilding is important for later when things actually start happening. Most of the NPCs you interact with will return later in more eventful roles and so on.

By the way, better warn you already: When you reach level 50 and unlock the climactic dungeons of the initial 1-50 storyline, do not queue up in Duty Finder as you would any other dungeon. There are lots of long cutscenes in those dungeons, and random people aren't gonna wait for you to watch them. Just make a group via party finder instead and specify it's a cutscene run - you only really need one max level player to solo it with, not even a full party.

Honestly, the only thing I can agree on is not taking big pulls. Doing it in a pub is an exercise in futility, half the time the healer fails to heal me through multiple groups even with cooldowns and stuns going off, or the DPS has no fucking clue how to actually deal damage in an AoE, so we're better off single targeting things (Which they don't do even on small pulls because "the best players always AoE in dungeons.").

I think that's the thing that pisses me off the most about FFXIV's playerbase. A lot of people see more experienced players doing something and halfway emulate it, missing some of the finer details in why it works. It's like seeing a tank wearing 270 strength gear but staying in tank stance the entire fight. The player has heard tanks wear this for more damage, but they fail to realize how to actually get more damage out of their character. Thankfully it's not really that big of problem for the most part since I usually group with people I know instead of straight randoms, but I've been seeing it a lot when farming VI materia lately.

That depends if you consider punching stuff to be fun. We got pretty shitty utility in the form of Brotherhood and other useless crap, while they simplified our rotation even more and Riddle of Fire fucks up your cadence just to give you "big" numbers once in a while. If you never played MNK it's no big deal but coming from someone that mained it since 2.0, it feels really out of place.

I'd say MNK is in a pretty decent spot damage wise, but it feels like they have no idea what to do with this job to further improve on it's core gameplay and give it useless crap instead. If you care about utility, you might as well just play NIN because it feels like the better MNK right now.

Nah, it's pretty solidly ahead of those jobs in personal DPS. FFlogs shows balance-subtracted parses now and SAM still occupies about 90% of the top 100, and is a solid 7-10% ahead of MNK at all averaged percentiles.

The thing is that I would be happy if they actually did what they had in mind, that is removing skill bloat. In MNKs case they removed 2 useless skills, reworked another useless skill so that it's still complete crap (OIP) and didn't even touch Arm of the Destroyer. All while giving us even more crap nobody ever needs in the form of Tackle Mastery and absolutely niche stuff like Riddle of Earth, that basically replaces Tornado Kick, another completely underutilized skill that serves little to no purpose. With removing ToD and Fracture they even fixed our TP problems, but were unable to think far enough as to rework Purification which is just another dead skill now. They could've started with removing fist stances for all I care since they're a relic of the past and nobody sane would use anything else than fire anyway.

However, it's debatable whether turning tank stance off is worth it or not, since the healer loses DPS making up for the greater amount of damage you're taking. You can get to level 60 doing only plot, dungeons, hunting log, and a couple fates. Heavenward is pretty cool, and bloodstorm has had some really cool dungeons, but base game only gets interesting if you care at all about the plot/get to end-game dungeons.

Pick a class you like and stick with it for the entire plot, other classes level up faster when you get one to max.

The only time it's ever worth using is if there's exactly 2 enemies. At 1 enemy it's too weak. At 3+ enemies your MP is better spent on Abyssal Drain.

End game dungeons are the fun part gameplay wise. Story picks up about a third of the way through each expansion. Heavensward and Stormblood have goty soundtracks.

Give it until level 40. Once you're 50 great sideplots open up to you, like hildibrand and Tam tara hard

If you don't care about market shit like customizing your chocobo or glamors gil is used for fast travel.
