Tbh, split joycons is probably more comfy since you can relax more. With the pro you, obviously, have to move the entire controller around. Only having to move one of the joycons is a lot more relaxing.

I didn't understand it either, but it is quite fun. I ended up playing 8 hours during the Splatfest and it was my first time playing.
The gameplay has much more depth than you would think, territory takes a bigger role than in any other shooter, of it depends everything.

No. As someone who lives on /arms/ no one says this. Last US tournament (2GGC) had Grand Finals with both people playing on pro-controller.
It's a matter of preference. There's nothing motion can do that controller can't. Yes, that includes wide-grabbing and grabbing up.

Splatfest actually convinced me to get a pro controller *eventually* -- totally not necessary by any means, but once I get a full time job in a month or so my disposable income will skyrocket so why not.

Tried switching it up between joycons on the grip and separate, and on the grip I felt I had a lot more precise and focused control, and the pro will have proper joysticks and be more ergonomic.
