On a side note, despite this being a vidya board and thread I feel like I should comment on the movie:

It was obvious it wasn't gonna be as successful or as well recieved as the original 2 movies with Toby. After the shit that the "Spider-Man" name went through (be it 3, Amazing 1 and 2) nobody expected to ever get as good of a film as the first 2 movies achieved. You'd be out of your own god damn mind trying to replicate their success, there's a reason why to this day they're still the best superhero movies out there, despite there being a new superhero movie each year, because of it's uniqueness due to Sam Raimi's top notch directing, even in 3 you could still feel his unique style all over it (the reason it failed is because of expectations and how Raimi tried to fit so much shit into a single movie). With that said, after the flop that 3 was people obviously weren't going to buy into the Spider-Man name as easily as before, again due to expectations brought by the success of the second film, but then came the Amazing series, which flopped aswell, twice, harder on the second go, from that point on the general audience didn't want to watch anymore movies about that hero because of how low the name went, the level of expectations were brought to a minimum after Amazing 2.

Then incame Civil War, sure Tom presented the character well and even did a fantastic job in his own movie, but the name was still filled with shit all over it outside of the U.S.; I remember asking a buddy of mine to come with me and my gf to watch homecoming in the movie theater, he said, and I quote: "Another one? No thanks, the last ones were so shit, I'd rather just wait till someone uploads it to popcorn time". Spider-Man just ain't as cool of an icon as it once was, both with adults and children (especially children). It was doomed to not do well due to the franchise it was linked to.

Opening weekend is important for studios because that's when they take the biggest share. If a movie is still running by the 9th week, the theaters end up profiting more from ticket sales than studios.
