Entire rhythm combo system is taken from Renzokuken and gunblade shot (and it doesn't have unique animations for larger monsters or cool finishers, really).
Button mashing for charging items is taken from FF8's GF boost too.
The rest of LoD's combat system is just a mess which shows that they had no fucking idea what to do with it.

I can't defend LoD's combat system too much.
Compared to most non ATB turn based RPG's it feels slow, clunky and shallow.
You are limited to your basic actions of attack/defend/item/run unless in dragoon state then you have MP based magic as well.
Be that as it may, it was enough for its time and I would be rock hard to see an expansion on the beautiful story that is LoD.

Aside from the rhythm mechanic of combat, this game was pretty horribly made. I'm surprised it gets as much love as it does.

LoD was my first ever playstation game, and led me to many many years of jrpg fun. Looking back it may not be the greatest, but I will always fucking love it.

I thought the dragon souls being more attuned with certain people. Like when Darts dad takes it back and then is a fucking unstoppable monster with it.

That was actually done to boost difficulty, since in Japan you could hold 60 items, and people complained about the game being too easy.
Personally it didn't bother me much, I'd always keep a couple spaces open, and never really bothered carrying magic items since for me they never really proved more useful than using D.Magic.

I found magic items the best way to deal with most bosses that at least had an elemental weakness as spamming like 3 or 4 magic items was usually way more efficient than d.magic, plus alot of the latter bosses had attacks to fuck with your dragoon form

For some reason I always pair this game with Legend of Legaia when thinking about old JRPGs.

So the two indisputably strongest parties are Dart/Albert/Meru and Dart/Albert/Haschel, but which one between the two is the absolute #1 best team?

Still salty that Dart was able to beat Rose.

i ran from back to front around 5 times with a guide looking for all the stardusts but couldn't find the last one

Well, it's your standard JRPG. The catch is that Rose and Lavitz are good companions. There's some action to the combat in the sense you had to time attacks right to increase damage and the combo.
And it's also a good feel to finally get your "Power Ranger" team together when you unlock the dragoon transformations for each one.

The second i decided to follow some walkthrough to make sure i wasn't going to miss the stone. So it took a tool having to read my every move before i made them. So i just lacked motivation.
The third i finally said fuck it, it's been a decade and i will finish this! Just for the game to crash in disc 4.

That fucking sucks. But I gotta admit I'm on like my 6th playthrough now and I already know it won't be the last. The game is just a joy to play through, with experimenting with different characters, "builds" and additions. On my current playthrough I'm using Dart as a tank, Rose as DPS and Miranda as magic dmg dealer, and it's a really fresh way of experiencing the game. Give it another shot anon, you won't regret it.

Emulating even lets you speed up the game so that you can power grand in a matter of minutes instead of hours (not that you need to grind in this game to begin with).

The dragoon one that let Kongol (or whatever was his name) transform. I don't remember if it was actually a game progression impediment but having one guy in my party that couldn't transform just wouldn't do for me.
I was so happy when i finally got his transformation so he was always part of the main group.

Just took a quick look to confirm whether what I remembered was right, and it was: there's two ways to get it. One is from buying it from a fucking merchant in some event, and the other is to get it after he fights his brother in disc 4.
