the whole plot twist of the first game planted the seed for the silly shit because there's no way to give it a proper explanation without it getting stupid and far-fetched

The idea of reprogramming humanity was interesting in the last episodes, but I'm still salty that THAT's the explanation for what happened. I thought we were going to see how Junko could elaborately network with the entire class and their powerful families and connections. I wanted more feels and character development. Nope, we get a few postcards in the credits of shit that should have been part of the story. I'm fucking salty over it.

It's kinda funny, the stupid silly horseshit was there in the first game, just not the forefront. All the technology in the school and used in the executions is pretty sci fi and the ending talks society being fucked and post-apocalyptic

So when the sequel rolls along, really the only stretch is the virtual reality thing but there was elements of that in the first game (with the AI character) so it's not really that big a stretch in my eyes. Ultra Despair Girls is more strange with the robots and this high-tech city that somehow avoided the shitstorm until that point. I'd say some parts of UDG are extra silly but you could almost cut them out from the canon and not change anything since only a few key points of that plot were important. Even in UDG I appreciated the series' cartoon aesthetic, so I can forgive implausible things happening because of how stylized it's presented, the series always felt like a fantasy.

Danganronpa 3 though (the anime), yeah that one was a bit too silly while also having a more serious tone than the games. You can write off a lot in a game for being for the sake of gameplay, but when it's all plot and presented like it was, it got really really silly. Personally, the whole "brainwashing video" was a step too far, especially when it's revealed to be the crux of the Disbearpocalypse. And it really makes no sense to me how the entire future arc had nothing to do with Junko at all, like I know it's a bait-n-switch but it really just feels like a step in logic is missing somewhere. I would've actually felt it was more plausible if AI Junko came back from the dead, because without that core antagonist the actions of the real inciting character is nonsensical

I love both games but I totally get the sentiment. Outside of the demons and such, Persona has just a bland normal anime art style. It contrasts with the otherworldly elements, I get that, it appeals to the mass audience, but it's true that it's just kinda eh.

Danganronpa has a decisively cartoony and pop-art esque look that I find really stylish, but yeah the series has the worst case of anime sameface that I've ever seen.
