Is there a map in game? I don't want to use the wiki because I feel like I'm cheating.

Yeah. I could really use a world map equivalent, if only so I know which way to turn my cyclops to get in the general vicinity of places.

So I keep getting random red dots flashing over parts of my cyclops. Don't seem to do anything, but I assume I'm supposed to be getting data from this?

Also, can bonesharks harm the Cyclops?

Goddamnit, I was hoping only leviathans could.

That's a pain. But everything <boneshark the Cyclops is invulnerable to?

what do you do once you finally have one, but before you've managed to get all the jazz you need for upgrades/customization? Is there some zone I need to get to?

And the floating island is opposite the actual island, re: the spawn lifepod, right?

I'm holding out judgment on the ghost until I see it in the wild, but I don't have high hopes based on pictures and sounds. If it was like a big fucking stealth eel that popped out and nabbed you that would be solid, but it sounds like it's going to grunt and swim around like everything else.

It's in a few of the darker areas like the Grand Reef, although without being the wrong spawn range like the Reaper you'll likely hear it before seeing it either way. Their surprise peekaboo levels will depend on whether or not they roar at random or only when they're chasing something, don't know I'm not currently in experimental.

With this next sentence I'm going to blow your mind.

There's nothing hard about it. They drop them endlessly while playing with scrap, and go friendly once you've dropped some for them.

Atheism.

>Mongolian societies inherited their technologies from the Chinese, but incorporated the customs of their multicultural colonist base. Non-synthetic foods remain popular. Religion is a strong component of society, but the Mongolians take a relaxed view of competing faiths, believing gods to be universally and equally flawed. Mongolians will often be heard proclaiming, 'I believe in gods, so long as they don't try to command me.' If pushed to explain how they can believe in a god with no authority they will explain, simply, that all people are gods, and their authority is equally zero.

Their schedule is generally monthly, although VotD ran pretty late and the current one is a lot of optimization efforts and bugfixes with some content so it could easily be delayed a little too.

25 hours /v/. That's how far I made it before I started using cheats. This is on my first run through, by the way. I just got the game a few days ago.

Once I unlocked the moonroom, I really didn't feel like going out and finding 40 titanium or however much you need.

Now it's time to build. This planet will become my home.

Titanium isn't all that hard to find, scanning things you've already completed gives it and scrap is everywhere in every biome above the Lost River. But if you're having fun who am I to stop you.

>>384111572
It's not that it's hard to find, I just didn't feel like going out yet again and spending 10+ minutes looking for a resource.

Plus I wanted to build a huge base and making them nocost was a time saver.
>>
>>384111564
it's absolutely great (gameplay is solid, soundtrack is top tier), but its biggest sing - there's only 2-3 hours worth of original content

also it has silky smooth framerate and great map system (which lets you track easily the areas you have already been in)
>>

Development took a 180, they removed the interactable terrain and started on the pretty shitty alien arc and added shit like the god awful intro music and the goofy corporate dystopia jokes which doesn't exactly help the atmosphere. Reapers were more terrifying when you were under the impression that no other sentient being had set foot on the planet.
>>
>>384111885
The interactable terrain is literally the cause of every single performance problem.
Get over it.

That's also the cause of all issues all voxel based games have from spengies to minecraft.
>>

it is voxel-based - the terrain is randomly generated each playthrough
>>
Can the Cyclops carry both Seamoth and the Prawn or only one of them at a time?
>>
>>384112918
Procedurally generated terrain =/= voxel based.
I think.
Don't know that much about it but you can probably just generate it without relying on storing everything as voxels.
Is there any way to modify the terrain in any way shape or form or is it always the same shape?
>>
>>384113212

they suck though because they are about this shit lame ass game with terrible monster designs for what are supposed to be the toughest enemies in the game
>>
>>384113212
originally, terraforming was meant to be a big part of the game, you were able to dig through the ground to hide from predators, sand sharks actually moved the ground a bit and there were creatures designed to dig holes and shit, also there was an item called a terraformer that allowed you to dig through rock. All this got scrapped because loading areas that had been modified at all took ages and it made performance worse than it is now. The map is still voxel-based which is causing a fuckload of performance issues but they're remaking it in a static mesh which should fix the 2fps
>>
>>384113362
Well shit, and I'm almost done with my Prawn suit too. Cyclops upgrade with 2 vehicle docks when?

Can't imagine how slow it would be to move around in the Prawn suit compared to the Seamoth.

I'm not afraid of the water but I think subnautica is probably the most terrifying game I've ever played. It lends itself to a primal fear of being alone and surrounded by the unknown. That said it's a great game. The terror is what makes it compelling. Little by little you venture out into unknown waters to scrounge some new resource and make at least some small section of the world slightly less terrifying.

Don't forget all the other resources you need to build the moonpool. And the resources you need for the vehicle modification station. And the resources you need for each individual upgrade module. And then you'll need to grind more common resources to build a big base.

It's not just 40 titanium. It's hundreds and hundreds of titanium, along with all the other resources. Finding them once is fine, but having to go do it constantly for everything you build gets old fast.

Don't act all high and mighty because you're wasting an extra 30 minutes going back and fourth on the sea floor collecting resources.

The problem is the animations for the game are done for a first person perspective.

When you look at your co-op partner all you would see is a static doll, more or less.
>>
>>384131374
Making basic animations and implementing them into the engine shouldn't be that hard if you have the skeleton for the character.

It's Unity, right?
>>
>>384131374

Animations isn't really much of an issue.
The main problem is how multiplayer would work with the save system and player death. Once you bring another player into the mix it changes a whole bunch of factors within the gameplay structure.
>>
>>384131594
Don't know honestly.

It's the excuse the developers used at any rate.
>>
>>384131798
The game takes place underwater. How many animations do you need for someone swimming compared to characters walking on land?
>>
>>384131869
You know you can also walk on land in this game right
>>
>>384132336
Yeah but compared to how much time you spend swimming, walking animations aren't exactly all that much.
>>
hmmm, what's a nice, deep place to base myself? preferrably close to a thermal source, since i don't have the nuke plant and the bioreactor seems bad.
>>
>>384132908
What do you want to do with the base?

If all you need is storage/some food plants/a powercell charger, you can do that anywhere with a bioreactor.

>>384133789
Safe shallows is basically the center of the map so that's as good a place as any to base out of and it can be powered with solar panels just fine.

I put my secondary base in the kelp forest near the entrance to the lost river at about 800m but its kind of a bitch to power those if you don't have nuclear reactors.

Yeah I realize that now.
But fuck, why does the ocean have a finite amount of fish in this game?
That means it's possible to just make an entire area of fish extinct. And I could have sworn that's what happened in my 45 hour game last year. All of the eyeball fish in a ridiculous radius around my base in the shallows were nowhere to be found because they were my source of food.

That was some dumb fucking shit.

That's supposed to happen. It forces you to push out further and explore because resources are limited and don't respawn.

But honestly hunger and thirst is a fucking joke. It's so easy to come by it's more an annoyance than an actual concern.

Pretty false equivalence, senpai. The loot and inventory and crafting system are the premier axis of gameplay in both minecraft and Subnautica. The primary gameplay- wander around uninhabited worldscape and gather resources and blueprints and so on- is the same between both mc and sn, and the only difference is one is a landscape, the other a seascape, and that you have to find and scan new blueprints in SN. (In MC you just try things until you figure out what works.)

Basebuilding, crafting stations, etc are consistent. Though certainly I like Subnautica's better. Again, the difference is that Subnautica actually feels like a complete game, not just autistic lego simulator.

For anyone who's nervous about this, the Ghost Leviathan in the Grand Reef is at around the 250m mark over the entrance to the Deep Grand Reef, which is in completely open water save for the tall spire of rock by the small Sea Treader area next to the DGR entrance. So you'll only be in danger if you're putting around at that particular depth.

Yeah it's pretty much just a hint system for lifepods and therefore blueprints and the tool for plot advancement midway through the game.

Most biomes have big wrecks to look for and as you play you can get a sense for the general layout if you pay attention.

The game needs...

More dynamic events. The game quickly loses it's novelty and mystery and becomes way too familiar so nothing is really an issue anymore. The first time an eclipse happened I was like "what the fuck is going on? is the world ending???", but then I realised it was just an eclipse. The game needs lots more things like this.

It also needs a medium vehicle that does between the seamoth and cyclops. The seamoth is fast and mobile, but lacks the utility the cyclops has and cannot explore as much. The cyclops is awful to control and slow as shit, but it can explore deeper than the seamoth and you can build on it and basically turn it into a mobile base so you've got everything you need on hand.
It needs something in between that has mobility similar to the seamoth with the depth of the cyclops but has less speed than the seamoth and you cannot build on it like the cyclops.

Base building needs expanding upon too. At the least it needs something like a double sized multipurpose room that has twice the vertical height too. A more square room wouldn't hurt too. Also the ability to travel vertically without ladders basically turning each level of the base into it's own area separate from other levels.

Also more smaller fish that have uses instead of just food (once you get some reggies or whatever that fish is called you literally don't need any other fish except for water fish and they become useless once you get a water filter or lots of salt). Being able to use crashfish as a missile is an example, more fish like this.

Also make more stuff to craft and build in general. Lots of materials in the game literally have a single use. It seems like a waste to go to all that effort getting a material that I will use exactly once (also it's annoying having 200 materials when they have no more use).

I think events are good; it should have enough content to get through the main plot without too much hassle or emptiness.

To that note, I think more events that hint you out towards wrecks or necessary fragments would be good.

Unrelated; how useful is 'training' stalkers to bring you scrap? Does it actually work or will they just let go of any scrap they happen to be carrying if you hold a peeper?
>>
>>384160424
The stalkers bring any scrap within some radius and put it in a pile near you. I sometimes tame one near the surface and have it collect scrap while I do something else irl
>>
>>384159012

Also biomes need more radical differences between them.

I know most have their own resources and certain creatures spawn in them, but lots of biomes feel like they either offer nothing or like one single thing.
>>
>>384160424
Stalkers will actually seek out and return scrap, but they don't look very far. They also turn hostile after only a few minutes. It's neat, but you can get a lot more scrap much faster by finding it yourself. They do, however, tend to pile scrap into one location, which can be handy.
>>

>>
>>384161027

I think the point is no one likes the Cyclops and piloting it is awful, but eventually you got to do it because the seamoth just can't go deep enough.

I just want something that moves like the seamoth but can go where the cyclops can, and I think most players do.
>>
>>384161304
So you want a double-sized Seamoth with little storage space and gets destroyed only slightly less faster than a normal Seamoth.

And seriously, how are so many people so bad at using the Cyclops and why do people keep screaming about things that have been outdated for like a month now? Bonesharks are no longer a threat to the Cyclops, the hull is stronger, there's an overshield as well as the invincible shield, there's a bunch of speed options and SR at any speed, decoys.
>>
>>384161304
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. But I could certainly understand people's issues with it.
>>
>>384161697

I'm still using the first ever seamoth I built. It's taken a fair few beatings but I have not lost it yet.

My issue isn't durability, it's mobility. The cyclops is just terrible to control.
>>
>>384161304
I use the PRAWN almost exclusively. With the grappling arm and jet upgrade you can swing yourself forward pretty quickly and it's got an ok storage with the storage upgrade, and obviously it can go as deep as you need it to
>>
Honestly, I just wish the Cyclops could hold two vehicles. And wasn't such a godawful pain to keep powered. The battery goes down EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE'S OFF AAAAAH

okay this game is really looking right up my alley, sandbox survival with light monster and naturally spooky scenarios. a few questions though :

>what is the weather like? are there storms? just light rain? do the waves get bigger/smaller? darker when the moon is obscured?

>do you need to eat? is there a variety of food to be created? having a variety of different food to make definitely helps my immersion into games, not just using health drinks here and there.....

>ive heard people say that there isnt much variety in marine life, i dont see how that could be possible.

>what is the weather like? are there storms? just light rain? do the waves get bigger/smaller? darker when the moon is obscured?
No weather effects at the moment, devs have expressed interest though.

>do you need to eat? is there a variety of food to be created? having a variety of different food to make definitely helps my immersion into games, not just using health drinks here and there.....
You need to eat and drink and you can eat a lot of small creatures as well as some plants (Marblemelons, Chinese potatoes, Lantern fruit), water is made several different ways.

>ive heard people say that there isnt much variety in marine life, i dont see how that could be possible.
In-game explanation, the Carar has done a number on the life along with a meteor impact in the planet's past.
Development explanation, it takes a long time to model, texture, rig, and especially program lots of different creatures. Here's a list of all the current beasties.

http://subnautica.wikia.com/wiki/Fauna
>>
>>384163747

You spend most of the time underwater so even if it is raining or windy, it's not like you'll notice.

You do need to eat, but food variety is lacking. It's all fish (and some ration that is extremely limited in supply) and there is almost no difference between most fish.

There isn't huge variety in marine life, but they're all fairly different in how they look and act.
>>
>>384163747
Weather is nonexistent.
Survival needs you to care for HP, Oxygen, Food, and Water.
Not a huge selection of fish, but the game feels alive regardless.
>>
>>384164223
There are fruits and vegetables to eat as well. Marblemelon (basically Watermelon) is actually the most efficient food in the game once you are farming it.

>>
>>384164598

Reginalds are better and stupidly easy to access and grow. Even peepers are a great and easy to access food source.
>>
>>384161304
I wonder if it might be better if there weren't so much wasted space on the cyclops?

I mean there's the whole downstairs section with lockers and the vehicle storage but the lockers could easily just be on the second floor and the vehicle could pack away into a tighter slot. It's not like being able to walk under the docked vehicle really adds much to the game.
Then there's the whole back section with the engine which is neat but again is wasted space and the engine could be more packed away especially since they didn't add anything like having to fix specific damaged parts, which could have been neat and required full access. The only thing back there is the upgrade console which could be merged with other areas like with lockers. Honestly, it'd make more sense up by the controls.

There's just a lot of space that you can't really do anything with and that just adds buffer that you need to run/climb through to get where you need to and presents more spaces for leaks and a bigger footprint for the whole sub.
You could pack engine, upgrade console and vehicle bay, lockers and sleeping cots all in the two main "rooms" of the cyclops and have the whole sub only be a little bigger. The seamoth already sets the precedent of rather silly vehicle to cockpit ratio.
>>
>>384164814
Can't farm them on Cyclops.
They also give shit water, which depletes faster than hunger.

>>
>>384165453

Coral is not in every biome and neither is salt. They also require power to produce and for you to constantly leave the Cyclops. Marblemelons you just grab three and then cut one and you get full food and water for nothing. The grow bed is like 2 Titanium.
>>
>>384165043

Waters not exactly hard to obtain and you can fill the cyclops with so many lockers that can be filled with so much fish/water you'll literally never run out ever.

In my main base I have an entire level full of lockers that are full of food. I think it's like 20 full lockers or something dumb. I have an alien containment with another 40 reggies and so many spare I made 6 bioreactors and filled them with reggies too. I've literally got to much reggies.

>>
>>384166116

Having a locker full of water and fish on your Cyclops ain't a bad idea either. For extended prawn trips. Marble Melons are inefficient to carry around on your person.

Semi-related, anyone else get HUGE fps drops after planting a round of melons on the cyclops? When they're fully grown there seems to be no issue, but freshly planted they fuck the frame rate into the dirt.

Once you're at the point where you have a cyclops and a prawn you don't really have to pick up a lot of things anymore anyway so the space isn't really an issue.

And yes the cyclops does not react well to melons. I used 4 planters and the next time i docked my prawn the cyclops started spazzing out and teleported over 160k away and left me behind.
