Is it a good investment in 2017? Or should I just go for a Switch?

Are there video games you want to play on it? If there are go buy one and do the piracy cheat if you are okay with it.
Buy a switch, don't be a bitch!

well there are only like 5 of them, I'm mostly interested in virtual console because I never had a chance to play games like Super Metroid/Fusion when I was a kid
DO YOU LIKE THE GAMES ON IT?
HUR DUR THERE'S YOUR ANSWER

seriously though, introducing a fucking virtual console on Switch right now could easily make me an early adopter, I could play all these actually good old games and BOTW, and then I'd wait for the Greatness™

Only if games that already came out interest you. The 3ds is on it's way out with N3DS already stopping production. There won't be too many new games coming out for it.

If you somehow have gone this many years without buying some version of 3DS, I'd say it would be worth your while grabbing the New 2DS XL coming out in a few days. It has a phenomenal library, definitely way more games currently out for Switch and you can save money on used gamesor by pirating everything like /v/ likes doing

At this point the 3DS library is like 95% complete so if you find a enough stuff you're interested in then go for it. Even if a lot of the stuff is just stuff you think you might like then go for it anyway since you can always pirate the games and you didn't really lose anything if they're bad. You should at least have a few titles you know you want to play though to justify getting the system.
If there's only one or two games you are interested in plus virtual console I'd pass.
