stealth really can work but things like reloading, taking out your weapon, and anything but a lowcrouch walk will make too much noise and will get you caught, try not to move through bushes too because that will make noise.

Once you are spotted, never peek the same angle twice, always switch and move elsewhere, always try to lean around cover if possible.

People will clamor on about stalker AI like it's something incredible but it's actually the some of the most brain-dead combat AI I have come across. The moment they lose sight with you they will automatically lock onto that location and move towards it, making it laughably easy to repeatedly flank groups that should easily be able to overcome you.

aim for the head, and play it modded for the first playthrough, despite what people will tell you, vanilla stalker isn't worth playing. Look around for different mods, there's a whole lot out there.

Dark Souls of FPS games in the sense that it runs like ass when unmodded and unpatched.
Aside for that, Stalker has got a decent story, good gameplay and isn't all that overhyped by zealous fans as being the best thing ever despite being rancid shit at best.
