Recently replayed Oblivion again and holy shit was the combat bad compared to Skyrim.
Any other build is completely inferior to sword & shield, magic sucks damage wise, combat turns into a stagger-fest when you're forced to fight more than 3 enemies.

And that's exactly how it should stay. The whole point of Akavir is that it's a completely mysterious and unstable continent, hell as far as we know it could be a reflection of a future kalpa. Every time in the past no race from Tamriel has ever managed to stay in Akavir for more than a few years, and every time Akavir invaded their forces were absolutely destructive.

And then we get a new game set in Akavir. All the mystery is gone since we are all just going to get spoon-fed all the answers. We'll know how all the races look like, how the landscape look like, and of course it's all going to look and feel like shit because Bethesda is making it in their shitty Gamebryo engine and still haven't hired proper writers.

Mages suck ass as followers too. All followers are a hassle. If you have more than one mage in your group, you're gonna have an annoying eyesore.

I used Erik as a warrior and Marcurio as a mage once. Got boring really quick since it made the game way easier and they have like 5 lines of dialogue. Sometimes they also got in the way and accidentally hit each other, then they turned aggressive and killed themselves.
Skyrim just wasn't made with this stuff in mind.
