I think Life only actually stops people from dying and heals lethal wounds. It doesn't bring them back from the dead. Plenty of people have died in the franchise and white mages and people carrying phoenix down couldn't do anything about it.

depends on the game. in FF14 much of society reviles black magic and black mages and they're mostly driven underground because of it
