It's alright. The new gameplay additions are fun and the story is alright, but the bosses are boring and so is the main character. Also the goddamn map doesn't give you store names so finding shit can be annoying.

1 and 2/OTR are definitely the high points of the series. Just expect more strict time limits and having manually gather the good weapons when you get into them.

I've read that you're not supposed to finish all the missions on your first run, and that you're actually meant to buff up your character on your first playthrough, so that you can finish more tasks on subsequent runs.

Look, DR is not a "lets just explore and look at the pretty zombies for 50 hours sandbox" game, its a "Oh shit everything is fucked I got to fix this in 3 days" game. The time limit is much more then just a simple limit, its more like time just passes normally throughout the game, like certain stuff only happens at certain times on certain days, its more "realistic" and adds a sense of immersion.

Its like playing a turn based 4X game and going "OMG this is bad game design because its not in real time and I hate having to deal with managing cities why can't I just make huge armies?

Its not even like you need to be that beefed up, memorizing item spawns and map layouts are key, along with rescuing survivors for cash/PP/Zombrex/shortcuts, grabbing magazines for bonuses, and using skateboards to get around quicker. Now thats using the good old noggin.

Alternatively since you dont care about DR2 just ignore the story and get used to the game. Sure you'll get a bad end but the games story is very short and its highly replayable.
