By default you could not play a Jedi.
If you found enough ingame collectables, you could unlock a new "force sensitive" character slot.
Your new force sensitive character was not a Jedi either, but could learn to become one if you did a long quest chain it total secrecy, because anyone who caught you attempting it could claim a bounty and you and you've have to start a new character all over again.

I just started playing BDO and after about 6 hours I'm pretty hooked still. I really like the mechanical complexity in the combat. The world design is also nice, I'm a lot more interesting in suspending my disbelief in the environment in this game than in a ton of other MMOs even if it shares more or less the same model as any of them.

BDO is garbage.

More than half the classes in the game are useless when it comes to the games only relevant aspects (grinding, and large scale pvp), and they prioritize new class release over actual class balance, which means they don't give a fuck. On top of that its just a shit korean sandbox grinder.

FFXIV is fucking stale, and the only thing that it really does is rehash. Nothing has really changed in that game since launch of 2.0, just the same super generic formula over and over again.

BDO is great but not if you are into more themepark, gear treadmill ones like WoW or FFXIV. Many people complain about the grind in BDO but it's because they are playing it wrong, since there's a shitload of other activities (Life Skills) to do other than just hunt mobs.

It's also buy to play, pay once and play forever at your own pace, no need to be a slave to sub time like in other MMOs.

eso's high level gear is more focused around getting set items usually in sets of 5 pieces.
for example a simple crafted set might give you raw stats while another set from a dungeon will give you a chance to proc a meteor to fall from the sky and hit a target you have a dot on.
Some even spawn pets for you.
Gear is also not about finding gold level items its about finding the set item in a nice trait then upgrading it to gold with an item ingame that you can farm for or buy from other players stores.
Late game eso is all about making a build using the sets ingame to fit your playstyle or achieve what you want. Some players go for raw stats to outgun others while healers might go for utility sets. Then when you have a decent build you can do the lategame hard mode pve shit to get the even rarer sets that may or may not work for a different type of build.

I got to level 10 and got bored. Quit and came back a year later when the free to 35 trial came out. Haven't been able to put it down since. Level 1-15 really fucking sucks on your first class though. There's a lot to take in, I've got like 600 hours and I'm still learning stuff. Because of that there's not trading (Yes, there's no trading in a sandbox MMO, let that sink) and everything you want to buy is by the auction house.
Bidding is no real bidding, is like "a buy now" button, but in pearl items (The cash shop items, mainly pets, costumes and the premium sub) there are a lot of people pressing that button at the same time, so the game takes a random winner.
You can place preorders in non-pearl items, in which the game tells you a price to preorder at minimum, and when the item goes into the market, the one with the highest preorder gets it.

Item gets registered on the marketboard which gives a serverwide notification depending on rarity. After the notification you need to wait roughly 15mins until it actually appears on the marketboard. The item will habe 2 phases, the first phase is the bidding phase that anyone can bid on, its basically a lottery that gives you the chance to buy said item if you get drawn.

The craft bag is pretty nice but most people will craft stuff for you if you ask so you dont need to be a crafter plus most shit can be purchased with gold when you need it.
So without a sub you just have to resist the urge to pick up everything unless its to sell it or use it.
Also you can find the base game on sale for cheap if you look at the right time and the expansions really arent needed right away. The DLC dungeons and pvp shit is more for high level characters so you can choose to pay for those later if you want. Getting the base game should be enough to test the waters to see if you really wanna invest time and money into the game. I gotta warn you tho early game can be confusing and rough but Id say get a character to atleast 30 or so before you decide if you are gonna stay.

For amulet, it's best to just get that from the Laurel vendor (can get it cheaper if you use WvW badges).
Rings drop often in fractals.
Accessories/backpiece = achievements.
The rest = 50+ fractal levels. They added new fractal achievements so daily you can get some chests which have reasonable ascended drop rates. In like a week of doing the dailies, someone in my guild got a whole set.
Over time doing fractals you accumulate fractal pages, fractal relics, and general materials allowing you to craft grandmaster marks which you can trade with a vendor in the new fractal lobby for ascended shit.

Also they added a way to switch ascended gear stats which means that useless ascended drop you got can now be turned into a zerker set or whatever you like.

I have some ideas for the perfect mmo.

1.) As degenerate as it may sound and become as a result, I think making it like Second Life would be a good basis. A world full of user created content and unlimited customization options. even if it means the world is likely to be swarmed by furries and bronies

2.) Now this is where it gets tricky, I think the WoW formula that all mmos have copied since WoW is stale and something completely new and original must rise up. Again, like SL, I think it should be a game that people can choose to play however they want, but I do believe that there must be core gameplay mechanics to it, stats you earn that you use to specialize in the aspect of the game that you want to play. It shouldn't be so totally open-ended like SL where people have to create the gameplay mechanics, the devs should be creating solid playing experiences and the users just supplement it.

I don't know every nuance of how it would work, but that's the type of mmo I want to play.

Same as me OP, I used to play WoW and Black Desert and FFXIV and in the end they are all the same: without group of GOOD friends they are not very good in the end. They all offer the same watered down experience which is made to appeal to every kind of people, to the lowest common nominator.

I used to spend lot of money for these but eventually you will realize you are better of to get experiences by playing 'real' vidya. There are countless of good games around and you'll actually finish those unlike the money draining MMOs. If you want to socialize on top of playing normal games just go on discord or hang out on /vg/ or something. Life is more satisfying when playing normal vidya. Emulation is damn awesome. Just launch PCSX2 and play Persona 4 for example. Or Metal Gear Solid 3... Old DOS rpgs are awesome as well, play Lands of Lore or Baldur's Gate 2... You get the idea.

STOP playing MMOs they do nothing else but drain your money and time. You don't accomplish anything in the end.

Rappelz used to be awesome, but I fucking hate so much that the server I was playing was shut down that I dropped the fucking game (I've lost everything, and there aren't any servers with my language anymore)

30 is also where the foundations of the class mechanics start to begin to slowly emerge so while the quests get real tiresome at least you can start to think about playing your class eventually.

I keep finding myself trying MMOs because I like character progression but I am COMPLETELY antisocial and unable to really interact with anyone on there. I always end up playing solo the entire time till I get bored and quit.

Same applies with MUDs. Its even worse with MUDs since they almost universally REQUIRE some level of interaction to get anything done.
