For Link monsters? Yes. In fact Link monsters just flat out can't be in defense mode.

Normal monsters still exist though. Link monsters are there to facilitate summoning monsters from the Extra Deck. As part of the rule change, you can normally only have one Extra Deck monster on the field, and only in a special area on the field. Link monsters can extend that area to where its arrows are pointing. allowing you to summon ED monsters in those spaces too.
