I like 4 the best. Comfy setting, probably the best of the three soundtracks (overall, not necessarily individual songs), and aside from the intro it had the best pacing.

3's story and characters were 2edgy4me and 5's pacing was all over the place with the endgame especially being a tedious slog.

Most of the confidants' stories had to be rail roaded into "Intro"->"Bad guy in my life" -> "Bad guy leaves thakns to momentos." Basically, they had to limit the way they told the story for momentos.

It also doesn't really feel like they grow or learn anything at all because their problem was mainly "bad guy in life" so when that was out of the way they were okay.

Good point. I remember P4 storylines being surprisingly compelling, making me care about characters I thought were uninteresting. They were transformative and self-actualizing, the obstacles being themselves rather than a "bad guy". Played into the "journey of life" motif echoed by the use of the tarot, a motif I really missed in 5. The trickster theme was rad, but I think 4 felt more impactful and its themes were better arranged to set up the more satisfying conclusion.

3 will always have the best cast and story. The only thing holding it back is its pacing, but let's not forget that every game in the series that utilizes the calendar has the same issue.

5 has phenomenal visuals and the best Persona combat. Not quite at the level of Nocturne, but still the best in this franchise.

4 is, although I hate to say this word, "comfy". It's relaxing, silly, and never takes itself too seriously. It is the defacto anime SoL game.

I think 3 at least came with different surprises adn the dialogue was spaced out enough.
Plus I liked the characters and the looming atmosphere a lot.

P4 was comfy but I feel like I was playing the same copy and paste month afte a while because it was the same set up with people getting kidnapped, having those people face their shadow and then becoming really useless for the rest of the story.

P5 was very much like P4, but bigger. But bigger in bad ways too. Story is sluggish, character interactiosn are way too long etc.

It's the game with the most casualized and watered down everything.
The setting is good, the characters range from ok to thrash, the direct control was a step up, but the combat was really watered down.

Again, this isn't about liking her best, but i can't think of a character who's style and pallete colours are more memorable and recognisable than hers.

I prefer 4 out of the nuPersona titles and 1 over 2. the first person dungeon crawling and that you couldn't spam fusion spells helped, as I don't think the cast or story of 2 is that special. 3's approach to crazy bullshit but still grounded sold it to me more, as 2 was a wild-ride I couldn't connect to

P5 is my first Persona game. I'm starting the hamburger palace now, and love it so far. I just wish there wouldn't be so long visual novel sections between palaces. I mean, they are fun when there's content, like the Hawaii scene, but most of the time it just feels empty, especially when my confidant rank is not increasing. Yeah, I just rush through each palace in 3-4 days at max at the beginning of the month and I'm left alone with a lot of free time afterwards.

Aside from a PS4, I have a PSP and a 3DS. With that said, should I try out P4 portable next or Persona Q?

4 is an underwritten mess that can't agree with how its main mechanic of Shadows work. It's easily the weakest, but it's still a phenomenal game. More than anything it's held back by being in an awkward position of having just introduced SLs being party members, so stuff like Yosuke's jealousy is written in such a way that it never appears in-story but is the basis for his entire Social Link, which makes it feel cheap and forced, especially considering Junpei did that exact story right last game. 3 is the best because I like it the most, simply.

The reason why I enjoy SEES so much is because they're the only ones that really progress in terms of friendship as the game goes on.

These are a group of people that, except for based Shinji and Akihiko, would never be interacting with each other under any circumstances. But because they're brought together by unlikely circumstances, you and them need to work to form a connection. They have inter party drama, and not the half assed shit like Ryuji/Morgana. There's some real hatred going around. But eventually you learn to overcome that, and it becomes way more valuable. Junpei does a complete 360 as a character and becomes a level headed individual who in the end is the only sane person in The Answer. Yuka-tan identifies what makes her a bitch, and when we see her in Ultimax she's toned herself down. Ken, despite being obnoxious, learns to forgive and forget in order to keep living his life. Akihiko doubles down on getting stronger. Aigis stops being a robot.

P5 doesn't develop the relationships between it's party members nearly as much. The initial group has a very good dynamic, but each character brought in slowly waters that down and sometimes the interactions are just illogical. Why is Makoto jumping to help Futaba when she's awkward around people? Wouldn't that be Anne's job? What the fuck was up with them beating up Ryuji?

There's P3P, but don't play it as a first timer. It's visual-novelized, no 3d parts and no animu cutscenes.

You can easily emulate the PS2 versions of Persona 3 and 4, try PCSX2. A relatively decent pc is needed, but nothing much since pcsx2 is pretty much made FOR the persona games.
Also the P4 portable is a Vita game, not psp

Because there are some games already which I missed and want to try out. Like Drakengard, Nier, Dragon's Crown, Silent Hill and now the Persona games just add to this list. The only characters who don't develop and change before the end of Persona 3 is like Shinji, cause he dies, and the Dog, which is more than can be said for any character in 4 or 5. Yosuke has some good devolpment at the end of his S-link, almost Junpei tier, but since it's out of left field and forgotten instantly since non-female main party S-links are shit it's never brought up in the main story, and no one, not fucking anybody, develops in 5, besides maybe that one text from Ryuji at the end of the game about preferring the be a hero in the shadows.

I only started playing the games in this series a couple months ago, and it's surprising how it felt like I already knew so many of these characters and their personalites. Junpei, Yukari, Kanji, Naoto, Adachi, and especially Chie were the most recognizable from spending time on /v/ and word of mouth.

On this subject, was anyone else around on 4chan in 2006 when Persona 3 released? This was the year I started browsing /v/ and some of the earliest memories of my time here were people up in arms about a protagonist from some JRPG being an edgy emo kid that shoots himself in the head, which finally clicked 11 years later that it was P3's MC. You summed up my thoughts perfectly. I loved the dynamic of SEES. You would never expect them together, and there is real teen drama that you can expect. There's also a realistic evolution as the trust builds up.
I feel like people are too hard on Yukari. You could easily tell she has major insecurities, and in The Answer, she clearly loved Makoto the most.
Junpei had real envy for Makoto, like anyone else would, with his wild card abilities, but he learned to work through that. He is better than all the other bros because of that development.
