This will feel different than every other console shooter. You should use gyro for a more mouse like feel. The difference will be learning how to recenter the controller if you turn it too far and avoiding getting into situations where you would need to do so in a fight. Also simply holding it steady can be more difficult since you don't have an even surface to support it.

The beginning was rough for just about everyone. You should be able to pick it up quickly though and I doubt you will be the only new player. The range of skill in the first game was huge, so it is unlikely you will have any problems as you move up the lower ranks.

Get use to using Y and a direction more than the analog stick to recenter quickly. Most importantly, just be aware of your surroundings and try to control choke points rather than painting randomly so you won't have people sneak up on you so often. Also, in the first Splatoon, the default sensitivity was high enough that you could turn all the way around without things getting too uncomfortable (approximately 90 degrees of controller turn to 360 degrees in game). The default for 2 is much lower, so you may want to raise it it for close range weapons.

Motion controls are simply more accurate than analog sticks for this game. There's no comparison. You will be gimping yourself if you choose to use analogs only.

If tilting the system around in handheld mode makes it too hard to follow what's on-screen, try tabletop mode instead by detaching the Joy-Con. Just do whatever you can to facilitate motion controls, because they really are necessary to be good at this game.

You want to use gyro for the same reason you would want to use a mouse. It gives you consistent and intuitive input so you don't have to think as much about what you are doing. Tilting the controller a certain amount will always turn you in game by the same amount so you can get use to snapping the controller to the correct position. In contrast with analog you would need to move the stick to a set position at a set speed and hold it there for a set time before moving back to neutral at a set speed. It is much easier to intuitively perform a motion rather than estimate a time and rate based input.

I've played handheld mode with motion on and that's NOT the best way to play. I had to constantly re adjust the camera (press Y all the damn time)


Having the controller separate from the screen is the best way to play. of course with motion on.
