Depends on what you mean by "later". Civ playthroughs have stages: early game, mid game, late game etc. and they play differently. If you mean by "later" as a few more games after, definitely your increased knowledge of the system gives you more room to be ambitious with your strategies.

Civ 5 is a bit more locked down compared to other Civs though. I haven't played 6 yet but I started playing in 3. Civ 5's empire type (can't remember what it's called) - liberty, tradition, art etc. - really locks you into what you want to do. And I've found liberty and tradition to be the best. I konw they've gotten rid of that in 6 but then 6 has its own quirks like Wonders needing planning way ahead.

well me on the other hand played it safe with about 3 cities and I got buttfucked by an uncivilized brute who just grabbed land until I was unable to make a move, so I don't make the same mistake anymore

Beyond Earth is an overpriced mod of vanilla civ5 with some differences, it was OK until you realize it has shit replayability. You can play Orion, Endless Space, Alpha Centauri, Stellaris.
