Just goes to show how much an actual soundtrack improves the game. It's a shame so much of the game is quiet

I would actually prefer quietness to the little ambient piano jingles that play in the overworld. I am so sick of them.

When I started a new file, the stillness of the plateau was so refreshing.

Yeah, they can be fun. But I miss the sensation of feeling like you've found something special like in the older games.
>>
>>383988964

hate how they went for a minimalist soundtrack but still only made one song for day time and one song for night
you'd think they'd put in multiple piano tunes for the general overworld kind of like minecraft did

>>
>>383987539
The content tends to feel watered down as if to fill the space the game insists on taking up. You walk more and do less and the shit you do is never as in depth as a game that takes care to craft more curated scenarios.

Good example is taking MGSV:GZ and MGSV:TPP. Ground Zeroes is the best fortress between the two games by far.

Similarly, BotW would only benefit by taking its core mechanics (the physics based shit is fantastic) and focusing it into 8 or 12 dungeons designed to test the player's problem solving, exploratory, and technical mastery of the game.

And on this note, the locations can and often do look great but for the most part the game utilizes that space simply by making you traverse them and do nothing with vast stretches of those areas. They overstay their welcome. There's no focus.

The game is Zelda: Meandering Edition. And the devs knew it. They knew the space had to be filled so they padded it out with tiers of weapons and armor AND made them consumables so they'd never be redundant by the vast world offering them too much.

When you make a game so large that you can't sufficiently fill it with -unique- rewards not too far apart from one another you have a fucking problem. A problem the very first fucking Zelda avoided while still being a Goddamned sandbox.

It's a great game but a better sense of focus would have only made it better.

More or less this. I wanted to go in blind so I really hadn't watched any footage outside of the reveal, the "open your eyes", and the one from the Switch reveal. I didn't want to hype myself up, but I figured if this game was TRULY going to be a "we looked at Zelda 1 for freedom" style, I wouldn't get a real experience of just traveling an unknown world since... well, 1989.

It's not perfect, but it's the first 3D Zelda I truly enjoyed.

It's funny how huge the plateau feels at game's start.

Also, the end of the Tarrey Town questline.

Skyward Sword: Meeting Ghirahim

darkbeast still a stationary bitch on master mode? It's one of the only things about the game that I can't reconcile
>>
>>383992718
Yes, but your archery has to be on point and you have to be far more mobile this time
>>
When the beasts fired the laser
>>
>>383993119
ehh; good enough for me. I figure after the first ganon fight darkbeast is would be more frustrating than anything else if it were actually challenging, and thematically it fits in with the rest of the game. Thanks for the straight answer.

first time finding a stalfos hinox was a pretty big moment. Training to fight guardians at the central hyrule tower in ancient gear/ goron set was also pretty fun.

I think the best thing about the game was getting to go on a truly self-directed adventure. So many ludonarrative moments where Link's intentions are 1:1 in line with the player's. the plot played it safe, but the game design took some huge risks.

I still really enjoy just wandering the different biomes casually adventuring for korok seeds. I can't wait for their next addition to the franchise to have this design. Can't get enough of it. the basic gameplay feedback loop is like crack for me

this was aazing.
i was climbing a ladder on an enemies camp near lake hylia and saw farosh from a far, so I jumped off got on my horse and B-lined it for the bridge.
I was pretty freaked out and amazed at it's size and thought it was a boss dragon as it was spewing electric, until I took a photo of it and knew the name was one of the gods name, so it was friendly.
Still took me a 3rd time until I saw it again to pluck up the courage to take a shot at it.
>>
>>383987880
This so much.

I love how they took something as mundane as getting the area map by climbing and activating a tower so epic.

You can see the tower from ages away, and once you actually reach the area it's dizzyingly tall. Not only do you have to climb all theway up there somehow, but there's a bunch of flying Guardians, which you have no idea how to deal with. It's like walking into a dungeon/temple/level the whole fortress is a big puzzle obstacle course thing.

Like so many places in botw, it's one of those areas that completely sucks you in, and you usddenly realize that you've spent an hour or more just doing stuff in that one place, unaware of the rest of the gameworld around you.

Yeah, sure.
So exploring with a purpose is not wrong.

Yeah, surely these kind of things ruing gaming.

Hyrule Castle
>>
>>383987539

When I turned it off after a hour and knew the game was shit
>>
>>383996327
Maybe you should take off your rose tinted glasses before looking at the old games.
They had a bunch of empty nothing and useless rupee rewards. In fact most "secrets" where rewarded with rupees or literally nothing.

It is not wrong for exploration to reward you, it's wrong to expect exploration to keep rewarding you with something exciting on every fucking step you make.

Also Shrines which you complain about are basically hearth container rewards.
>>
>>383996507
>it's wrong to expect exploration to keep rewarding you with something exciting on every fucking step you make.

Go home and play some Gone Home you fucking hippie, if you want a walking simulator.
>>
>>383996507
I was just pointing out that hating the concept of rewarding exploration with something different than exploration itself is retarded.
I mean, you explore an hidden zone in ANY open world? You find something unique, just remember the hidden cities if FF7 or FF8, which you could totally miss.
In BOTW, you reach shrine, but they feel a bit stale after a while, with always the same "achitectural theme", I think exploring the world was actually better than finding shrines, that more often than not resulted in some mechanical task.
Anyhow, I find that appreciating BOTW for "the exploration" for the sake of it, means I should appreciate No Man Sky, but everybody hates it, so why the double standard?
>>
>>383996454
Same

>finally manage to get into Castle Town

>manage to get into the caves by doing some borderline retarded climbing under the main bridge

My second favourite moment in HC is getting shot down the walls right before the first Lynel guardhouse. Survived with Grace and had no clue where I was, so I ended up taking a completely different route on the way back up.

Every time there was a stories thread on /v/

the best part about the game aren't specific set pieces, but personal experiences instead.

>Get chased by guardian to high hell and back
>Nearly dead
>No food
>No good weapons left, only run
>Start running across the bridge still targeted and sweating trying to dodge them all
>Its the bridge leading to the Giant tree stump in a lake
>Fuck fuck mobli-- FLAMEGREATSWORD SHIT
>Guardian gave up but the moblins spotted me before I made it over
>Asshole could crush coal into diamonds at this point. Sprint through and dodge attacks
>Grab the flame greatsword and jump off into the lake
>Right as I do lighting kills the moblins behind me

The game has experiences that make it feel like only you got the experience and was unique to your playthrough.

I don't want to play a zelda game this big again though

I absolutely HATE HATE HATE this about the game.

BotW went from a 10/10 to barely an 8/10 for me when I realized the meat of the game is shrines. Almost everything cool in the game has a shrine at the end of it. The sheer volume of them actively taints the geniunely good ones.

God I'm so tired of those stupid monks.
I'm so tired of spirit orbs being the end reward for everything.
I'm so tired of that fucking ancient high tech look.

>worst ending in any Zelda game
>15 enemies max minus recolors
>plenty of houses in towns but literally nothing of interest in them
>artificial playtime due to constant pausing of the game
>no recipie book - razorshrooms and rushrooms are self explanatory, but more complex dishes are just a pain in the ass to remember
>no memorable music outside of Zoras Domain and Rito Village only because its somewhat recognizable
>no bug catching net / bottles
>no rolling
>no magic meter
>shrines shrines shrines shrines shrines
>items replaced by runes
>weapon damage without any notification other than it glowing red and a message popping up, even a simple % number would do, like when the master sword recharges, it gives a timer
>emphasis on exploration but only rewards you with poorly placed shrines and korok seeds
>>
>>384004869
Yeah enemy variety is one of my only disappointments in the game. Hope they add in more via patches or DLC or whatever
>>
>>384004910

also, to add

>calamity ganon was disappointing and less of a challenge than say, the Gerudo boss that uses the magnet gimmick
>master sword isn't required for the final blow, just use light arrows 5 times during a on-rail shooting segment
>>
>>383988759
I tried to make the final strike on his eye with the master sword and he shot a laser from his mouth a killed me.

>>
>>384005054

i did not say that, you fucking idiot. I said people are typing shit like it's their first day here. Epic is not used seriously, anywhere, ever, anymore unless it's marketing a "gamer" product or its like a movie or something during the trailer.

I'm not even trying to brag about being here for so long because this place is a shithole but im just trying to make a point that I didn't say anyone who likes it is a shill, I said there are people that type like this trying to think they blend in with everyone else and anyone who's been here longer than a month will realize that no one types like this unless they're not from here, or underage.

You can like BOTW, but its not an amazing game.
>>
>>384005296
I like it and think that it is an amazing game despite its flaws. There are also a lot of awesome moments.

Sorry I don't agree with you anon

>nitpicking

they removed things that have been present for the last 30 years. I went into BOTW with an open mind, expecting it to be different, but i didn't realize how much they had removed until it was too late.

at least i got to sell it on ebay for full price.

>>384005369

how can an amazing game be amazing if it has a shit ton of problems?

i think you're just experiencing a breath of fresh air because usually these games have a lot to do and its all laid out for you.

BOTW you need to explore but you explore for so long that even the smallest thing is rewarding.

and of course, pulling the master sword. I have a weakness for repeated music over a series. every damn time i hear the jingle it sends a chill. Hyrule Warriors and Skyward Sword had the best

>>
>>384005686
I don't think it has a shit ton of problems, my main issues are with its difficulty and enemy variety but that is about it, and I think the shrine orbs are rewarding enough, and they are seen often. Funny how people have different opinions
>>
>>384005686
Most of the problems I have with this game are far overshadowed by what I like about this game, so yes the game is still amazing. Why can people not understand this? A game can be amazing to you if you think its merits far outshine its flaws

Top three moments:
1. Stumbling across the Seven Heroins quest and solving it on my own before ever reaching Gerudo City and with no heat resist gear and potions, using the shadows of the statues to avoid the heat in the early day and campfires to wait for night time at noon
2. Leaving the Plateau for the first time, going the complete opposite direction than the one the King pointed to me, stumbling upon a baobab grove, trying but failing to tame a giga-horse, running away from my first Lynel by climbing a mesa where I fought my first Talus (and won after a few deaths) only to follow a smoke signal to a new shrine and a shitty cook
3. Racing against Dinraal, my first dragon, alongside the Tanagar Canyon while riding on a deer.

>>
Definitely Eventide for me, went there early game because I mapped all of Hyrule before doing the divine beasts and I'd strongly recommend that other people do the same. The major test of strength on the way there is a good challenge too, took almost all of my weapons to beat it.

Best part of the island for me was realising halfway through the hinox fight that kiting him with bombs was taking too long so I used magnesis on one of the metal boxes and slapped him with that a few times instead.

Fav moment was getting to ride best boy sidon and save his town. But also just the ending, going into the castle and having the haunting music play while knowing you're finally getting close to your goal. For me I put off actually beating the game until I had done all shrines and gotten all memories so it felt momentous. Trying not to get my hopes up that Champion's Ballad is going to be a post-game thing since that would mean that you get to see Hyrule after you defeated him and got true end.

I think they were eventide done better, considering the only way you can cheese them is by eating for food buffs before entering.

Reusing the "stripped down" gameplay wasn't bad and is a reasonable way to balance the trials for both beginners and endgame players but I hope in the next dlc we get something different for people who've done everything there is to do and use our beefed-up master swords/savage lynel crushers/whatever on new mobs or something.

When he starts zipping around, parry him. When he starts throwing lightning rods at you, redirect them at him with Magnesis, otherwise shoot/wack his shield until it breaks. Using wooden/bone weapons is preferable as they don't conduct electricity.

Favorite moment is when I shutdown the game. It's just too boring and bland for me. I like the setting and comfyness but eventually the eeriness is stopping the game to progress. It's too timid and you'll find yourself repeating the base game mechanics over and over again - i.e. gathering stuff constantly, constantly switching weapons, constantly just walking in forest. But it's still very comfy but not 10/10 as everybody says. Solid 7/10, still a good game.

The gameplay loop of Botw stands out as part of why it's more enjoyable than NMS. being able to actually walk from eldin volcano to Gerudo Desert to the Hebra tundra to the zora's domain in real time without loading screens is actually fantastic even if we take it for granted.

I stopped warping about halfway through my first playthrough and it increased my appreciation for horses and stables. The quiet time of a game that points you toward things and lets you handle it entirely your own way is the best thing it has going for it. They kept enemy camps and beasts fairly straight forward, but being able to engage with any of the content when and how you want to is startlingly freeing. I'm also one of the few people who stopped giving a shit that every reward was a shrine. It's just them reusing the game's central aesthetic to give out experience points, why would I be mad about that? it's only stale if you expected a different aethestic after a point, which has never been how zelda does things. look at tp or albw; they both have one central aethestic that stands our pretty clearly against the hyrule backdrop. they took a risk by using the central aethestic on the dungeons as well, which I think is where they crossed the line. The four big area/threats should have just been traversable areas rather than gundams. The next game will probably fix this anyway, because the series hasn't reused aethestics aside from very specific direct sequel instances. This was our dose of space-tech hyrule, and the next adventure will probably keep the majorly good points of this game and take things in another direction.

Probably the first time I got off the plateau and started making my way to Kakariko Village, when the sheer scale of the world and the amount of freedom I had suddenly hit me. I haven't felt a twinge of excitement like that in many years of gaming.

Man the labyrinths were good. I went out of my way to never scale on top of the walls/use Ravioli's gale because I loved exploring them so much. If they made a spinoff or DLC that'd be nothing but mazes, I'd buy it.

>ignoring the whole point being made about first Zelda
You're painting it as if he is saying Zelda 1 has no problems, but he never said it was perfect. Because talking more about Zelda 1 would be him going off topic about another game entirely and it's issues, which isn't the point of the post.

The point is that Zelda did rewards right but had a similar reward structure. Zelda BOTW doesn't have any meaningful rewards but has an even bigger open world that's made all the more meaningless for it.

Learn to focus on the main point.

Fighting Vah Ruta, that moment had lots of build-up and it was the first Beast I tackled

People complaining about Master Mode must just be bad

I see so much shit talked about in BotW threads that I never saw, it's great. I'm not ready to play through it again yet but it's cool that I've got a bunch of stuff saved for a second playthrough.

They literally are.

Unless it's Master Mode Sword Trails: Floor 10 AKA: Cheese or die.

>looking for memories before leaving the plateau
>no mention of bows or arrows
>totally awful weapons that ensure a 30+ minute fight with no mistakes, dozens of arrows, and a handful of bows

really pointless thing to lie about, honestly

Going into Hyrule Castle early out of curiosity just to see what was in there. The moment when the music kicked in was pure 10/10.
>>
>>384042178
I love how the game actively encourages the player to go and explore the castle without forcing you fight the final boss.

>hear some weird music and look around at the enemy encampment and back up at the bridge structure to make sure nothing's watching me from above
>suddenly see that big ass fucking dragon flying over the bridge I just crossed
>gallop the hell away because I didn't know what the fuck was happening and it looked like it was flying towards me
>>
>>384042902
I wouldn't say the game encourages you to go there at all, but it doesn't need to. Curiosity is pretty powerful. Hiding the Hylian Shield down in the deepest depths of the Castle with zero indication that it is there was pure genius in that way.

one of the earliest sidequests in the game is to find a cookbook in Hyrule castle

I thought I could be a real clever dude and just glide in as close to the center as possible, since I figure that's where an important location would be

boy was it a shock to find it it was literally pitch black, and the only thing I had on me was a fire sword that was about to break

Same on all three counts. It's better to do Eventide early, anyone who did it late missed out.
